Befana’s Legend Christmas Trees Are
Of Many 1 arieties
Lives On in Italy
B ria n s was sweeping h er thresh­
old when the W ise M en passed on
th eir w ay to B ethleh em — and Be-
fana finished h er sw eeping before
she thought about going to B e th le­
hem. F in a lly she blew out h er can­
dle, latched h er door and, clutching
h er basket of treasures, she set out
to follow the W ise M en,
A straw doll and a la rg e seed—
these w ere B efan a's treasures The
larg e seed had been h e r own baby's
b all and. long ago, chubby hands
had fondled the s tra w doll whose
va rm e n t she had m ade fro m a piece
of h er wedding dresa. H ad net the
shepherd told her the L ittle K in g
was a poor child? As she h u rried
onw ard, B efan a visualized the L it ­
tle K ing fondling h er m e a g e r tre as­
ures.
Alas! night passed and m orning
cam e; then night again, and there
was no one fro m whom she m ig ht
ask the way. When the S t * r dis­
appeared Befana knew th at, having
hesitated, she would search fo re v e r
w ithout finding the C h rist Child.
In Ita ly , L a Befana goes fro m
house to house b earing gifts to c h il­
dren on E p ip h an y eve. H e r counter­
p art. Russian Babouska. knocks on
each door w ith h er staff and, e n te r­
ing. holds a candle to the faces of
sleeping children. She slips a toy
beneath th eir pillows and h u rries on.

to the Babe of B ethlehem whom she
has n eve r found.

sam fir. is the ideal C h ristm as tree
and has been so revered for years.
I t resem bles the spruce except that
the needles a re not sharp pointed
and th e tree becomes golden brown
before if sheds its leaves or needles.
T h e Douglas fir is also com m only
used as a C h ristm as tree. T he nee­
dles a re flat and smooth to the touch. 1
I t can be identified by a n um ber of
buds a t the tip of the branches,
w hich cause the needles to bend
aside, changing the re g u la r com b­
lik e ap pearance of the tw ig. This
tre e has cones w hich a re short ap­
pendages on each scale.
H em lock, w hile used as a C h ris t­
m as tree, is objectionable because

y e a r.

a rm y exchange g ift service isn’t just
a holiday organization. I t provides
gifts fo r ev ery occasion— b irthdays,
M o th e r’s d ay, E a s te r and any other
tim e a soldier feels lik e sending a
