This is u reduction from the toll of six pedestrians killed in Svptembi of 1943 which was 24 percênt of the total fatality list. There wen two bicycle deaths this month compared to one a year ago. Only two deuths resulted from collisions between motor vehicles this September. A year ago, there were 11 fatalities involving '’ollisions between motor vehicle® >r 44 percent of the total dent*' oil. There were five from non collision accidents this Seph her and four from vehicle colli- 'ions with fixed objects. Since speed too great for exist ing conditions usually is a prime factor in non-collision accidens, while failure to yield right of vay»or driving on the wrong side >f the road are the prime factors in collision accidents. Farrell de clared the fatality toll for this September indicated a need for more drivers to watch their speed on rural highways. Speed checks maintained by the trnffic engi neering division of the state high way department on the Pacific highway indicated onlv 18 per- cent of the drivers using this highway in September held their speed below the 35 mile wartime speed limit. i "With vehicles and equipment getting older and with tire re placements uncertain, it is im portant that drivers hold their speeds down as a conservation measure as well as a safety mea sure,” Farrell declared.
