Fire in Persist Area
Controlled by Loggers Talent Man Dies at
A crew of more than 100 men, Ashland Hospital
'loggers and forest service fire-
ighters, Tuesday morning had
brought under control a fire in
the Persist area on the Umpqua
Divide, which started from a log
ging operation Monday after
noon and awhile threatened to
get away completely.
The Rogue office here report
ed that a line had been thrown
around the fire, and that it w ill
remain under control unless
winds come up.
More than 125 acres were burn
ed over, the worst fire in the lo
cal district this year.
The Persist area is between
Prospect and the head of Elk
Creek, and the smoke billowed
so high that it could be seen
from the valley floor. Travelers
coming down the Crater Lake
highway thought the whole coun
try was on fire.
