THE LAST WAR
By R U TH TAYLOR
Even in the m idst of battles,
m en's minds are troubled by the
th o u g h t—“Is this the last w a r ? ”
Will th e next generation have it to
do over ag a in ? W hat can we do
to p u t an end to the successive
w ars beween the tyranny of auto
c ra ts and the self rule of demo-
c ra c y ? "
W e established the Am erican
w ay of life by the W ar of Inde
pendence.
We reaffirm ed these
principles by successive w ars.
B ut—if this is to be the last w ar
we have n o t only to reaffirm it
again but to put i t into practice
in our own lives.
The o th er day I heard a speak
er say: "No d ictato r usurps pow-
es. Pow er alw ays passes by de
fa u lt”. W ar alw ays comes when
dem ocracy grow s weak.
F irst
Greece then Rome.
And now
twice in the past generation we
have had to fight for o u r lives.
W e say we believe in the p rin
ciples set fo rth in the D eclara
tion of Independence and in the
C onstitution of the U nited S tates.

of w hat these principles may be
m ade to mean of the practical
ideal of brotherhood. W e have
m ost of the national, racial and
religious groups represented a-
mong our citizens. How we work
out the every day living together
of these groups is the te st of how
the world can w ork out cooper-
tion, of w hether or not this will
be th e la st war.
U nless we can work together,
I w ithin the confines of our own
country, giving to all an equal op
p ortu nity to utilize their God-giv
en talents, we "are not true A m er
icans. Unless we can afford to
give all the chance to develope
as individuals, inspired and not
handicapped by their backgounds
national, racial or religious, we
a re unfaithful to our past heri
tag e and we a re preparing the
ground for another war.
The first place in which to
dem onstrate o u r beliefs in the
ideals of dem ocracy is in our own
lives. W e m ust guard our own
thoughts We m ust set a seal up
on our own lips. We m ust learn
to seek the good—not the evil in
our neighbor We mus try to un-
derstand him. Above all, we m ust
ju d g e him as a fellow Am erican
upon his own m erits, not as a
m em ber of any group.
A m erica is not any one class or
religion or group. Am erica is all
of us—incoporated. If we would
realize th a t we are all sharehol-
ders in democacy and th a t it is
up to each of us individually to
see th a t it works, we would give
a dem onstration of concerted ac
tion th a t would prove so com
pletely the power of our way of
life th at subversive movements
would fail by com parison.
I t is up to us to decide w heth
e r this is the last war!

THE FOREST FIGHTS!
On the battlefronts of the world, forest pro*
ducts are backing our boys in the fight for
freedom. From the beaches of Normandy to
the shores of Saipan, wood is a number one
critical war material. Landing barges, gun
stocks, battleship decking, PT boats, airplanes
and smokeless powder are just a few of the
more than 1200 military uses of wood. Sixty
billion hoard feet of lumber went into the
war effort during the past three years and
this demand is steadily increasing as we press toward Victory.
More than one-third of this wood comes from Pacific North
west forests— a major part of it from Oregon, the greatest
timber-growing state in America. Much comes from Jackson
County! Our soil will keep on growing magnificent forests
to serve the world— IF WE KEEP FIRE OUT! Foresters say
this is liable to be a bad forest fire summer. These hot days,
a dry east wind, and one spark, one match, or one cigarette
can turn hundreds of acres of precious green forest into
blackened ruin. Don’t YOU be the careless one!
