The speed checks are m aintained by the traffic engin­ eering division of the highway de­ partm ent. The section of the highw ay u p ­ on which highest speeds were re­ corded was the a rea south of Junction City where 85 per cent of the m otorists traveled a t speeds of 52 m iles an hour or under. The lowest section w as the area» north of Jennings Lodge, where the top figure fo r the 85 per cent faction w as 47 miles an hour. "As tires g et older and as the sum m er heat adds to the heat generated by friction, high speeds become increasiingly dangerous,” F a rre ll said. "The safe life of a tire a t 50 miles an is only half of w hat it is a t 30 miles an hour. Older tires are m ore susceptible to deterioration from heat than new ones.
