Servicemens Wives
Enlist in WAVES
More wives of service men are
now enlisting in th e WAVES than
a t any tim e in th e tw o-year his
tory of this wom en’s service of
the Navy in Oregon, which in
dicates the over-all popularity of
women In the arm ed services
among men in uniform , accord
ing to Herb. C rain of the Med
ford Navy recruiting station which
handles WAVES applications in
this area.
*
l a t e s t enlistm ent reports for
Oregon show th a t 27 per cent
of recent groups of young women
departing for th e WAVES indoc
trination school a t H unter college,
New York City, are m arried
women whose husbands are in the
arm ed services. A year ago, only
3 per cent of the enlistm ents were
women with husbands in uniform.
Three main facto rs have caused
the sharp increase in enlistm ent
of m arried women. According to
these reports:
“F irst, the service man has dis
covered th at th e WAVES offer
the m aximum of protection, care
for health, training, education and
fascinating w ork for his wife. As
a WAVE she will have a good
income, since the average WAVE,
a fte r four m onths’ training, re
ceives $168.50 a month, including
allowances. She has the best of
food, medical care, living condi
tions—so G I Joe o r the Navy
Bluejacket can be su re th a t his
wife is probably b etter cared for
in the WAVES than, in civilian
life.
“Second, the wife of a service
man who joins the WAVES can
receive his $50 allotm ent. This
allotm ent, plus her income, plus
his income gives the average cou
ple a larg er income th an they
could m ake in civilian life, con
sidering the fact th a t it is tax
free and th a t all incidentals are
paid for by the services.
“And third, tne ruling eight
m onths ago th a t wives of Navy
men, below the ran k of ensign,
can join the W AVES opened the
service to m any young wives.
These couples discovered th a t it
was a lot b etter and a lot more
profitable for them for ‘the M rs.’
to be in N avy uniform than to
be living w ith relatives o r try in g
to catch up with each other be
tween tours o f activ e d uty on
fighting slaps or a t advance
bases. And, too, they got fed
up w ith try in g to m aintain a
home a t congested seacoast cities.”
PEAR PSYLLA FOUND
One specimen of p ear psylla
was found in late Ju n e in a pear
tree 1!£ miles south of the sim ilar
.slight infestation discovered late
last year. "Hie location is on a
farm on route two. F reew ater. A
sp ray program has been set up to
eradicate th e pest. A sp ray pro-
g ram was carried on in a mile ra
dius around th e infestation found
in 1943 and no fu rth e r specimens
have been found in th a t area. This
is the th ird m inor infestation
found in Oregon since pear psylla
was discovered three y ea rs ago in
the area around Spokane, Wn.
The firs t finding in Oregon was
n ear Milton.
Officials of the s ta te d ep art
m ent of ag ric u ltu re point out th at
the finding of an isolated speci
men is not alarm ing, so long as
the close check already in effect
is continued, as it is and will be.
So fa r no infestation has been
found in any of the com m ercial
p ear grow ing areas of Oregon,
W ashington or Idaho.
The sp ray program has been
carried on by the federal bureau
of entom ology and p lan t q u aran
