Fay Pettis, freshm an from E u gene, Alice H arter, Junior of E u gene, and Louise F letcher, fresh man from Portland, introduced by Mr. R. B. C lark of the speech and dram atic departm ent of the university, presented three phases of this very timely topic, how ex tensive is this problem, how Ore gon handles h er cases, and how other com m unities are m eeting lo cal situations. ’Less than 2% of Am erican school children become delin quents”, stated Miss P ettis, "but of this group 75% become adult crim inals ” She continued by s ta t ing th a t It is a misconception to think of delinquents com ing from below average groups of young people. They do tend to come from poorer homes as is shown by the num bers in the detention home in Woodburn, not because the poor are delinquent but because pover ty lends Itself to delinquency. Alder street, P o rt land. "Xhe United S ta te s has asked the Oregon Federation of Wo m en’s clubs for help in the vital [ and urgent program for the en listm ent of WAVES who replace trained navy men for duty a t sea,” said Mrs. George Moorhead, S al em, president of the Ofegon F ed eration of W omen's clubs in an nouncing the state-w ide program which will bring 150 clubs and 5000 women into the project. “The Navy desperately needs men. Thousands are required for the w arships now com ing off the ways and for the naval shore establishm ents which m aintain tin- fleet a t its full fighting strength. The num bers of trained men available from all sources are fa r sh o rt of the requirem ents it our seven ocean navy.” “Therefore, more women are u r gently needed in the WAVES to release the tra in e d men a t shore stations for this serfice a t sea.” Each club m em bers becomes a WAVE recruiter. She has full in form ation on the opportunities offered young women, the 22 schools a t which she m ay attend, and o ther details of th e WAVES program . The individual quota of each club m em ber is to help in enlisting at least one WAVE. H er WAVES m ay come from any place in Oregon, Southw estern W ashington, and Idaho - - she is not lim ited to her own com m unity. ------------ o------------ M rs. This conference, attended by representatives of Oregon, W ash ington, Idaho, California, Nevada, and Arizona, was arranged by the Extension service a t Oregon S tate college as one of a series of sim i la r conferences throughout the nation sponsored by the U. S. de p artm e n t of agriculture. Plans were agreed upon a t the confer ence for enlisting coordinated aid of every public o r private agency, club,- o r group th a t can help in su re the continued and even in creased production of home g a r dens This year. “Indications are th at w ar in th e Pacific will likely increase, bringing a g re a te r demand for food in our region,” the food re quirem ents com m ittee of the con ference reported. “This will result in a trem endous increase in de m and for com m ercially grown foods.
