E arl Snell has called a t tention to the designation of the week of M arch 19 to 25 as the Oregon Safety Week and urged statew ide participation In this program of accident prevention ind educational efforts. "A ccidents In the home, in the schools, In traffic and in daily occupations take a toll com parable to th a t of w ar itself and y et are in large m easure preventable,” said Guv. Snell. Accidents disable and in many instances elim inate m an power. A ccidents are burdening overworked physicians ami o v er crowded hospitals. Oregon S afety Week Is to be an accident prevention cam paign incorporating the united efforts of the Oregon S afety Association, the S ta te D epartm ent of T raffic Safety, the Am erican Society of S afety Engineers, the P ortlan d rra ffic Commission, the M ultno mah County C hapter of the Red Cross and m any oth er o rg an iza tions on safety activities. Evangelistic Bible Conference to be Held First Baptist Church An evangelistic Bible C onfer ence will be conducted a t the F irst B aptist C hurch from March 21-26 inclusive. Roy L. Brown, an outstanding Bible teacher and sta te eveangelist 'o r th e B aptist Church, will be in charge of this worthw hile conference. Mr. Brown uses c h a rts to illus tra te his Bible lessons. Services will be held each even ing a t 7:30 and at 11:00 a m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. ------------ o------------ Oregon District Leads Nation in . • » Navy Volunteers The Oregon district is leading the entire ninth jo in t service in duction aiea, which com prises the nine w estern states, in the enlist m ent of volunteers for the Navy, according to word ju s t received by R ecruiting S p e ci a 11 s t Herb Crain, in charge of the Medford N avy recruiting station'. Based on the num ber of non- d ra ft-ag e volunteers per thousand population, the Oregon district scored 36.61 points in the period covered by the latest report. S alt b ak e City was second with 32.36 points, I » s Angeles third with 28.72 and Seattle fourth with 27.02. O ther main stations in the 9th JS1A are ITioenix, Helena, Boise, Spokane, and San F ran cis co. The P o rtlan d main station, which is the N avy recruiting ' head q u arters for the Oregon divi sion, also holds ano th er honor a t tnis time, the recru iter announces, being in No. 1 position nationally in the procurem ent of recru its for the N avy’s new program to train radio technicians. I The P o rtland station has re corded a g re a te r percentage of successful applicants than any o th er district, boasting the am a zing perform ance of one success ful candidate out of every two who tak e the qualifying test, the recruiter reports. He emphasizes th a t men of d ra ft age, as 17-year- nld volunteers, may apply for ra dio training. I t is planned to m ake the Good F riday evening service the climax of the week with a pantom ine g ath erin g into one program the thoughts and inspirations of the daily evening services.
