D. C. npoke to members uml guests of the Jackson county league at a special meeting held Monday uf- temoon at the Girls' Community clubhouse in Medford. As u preface for her remarks, Miss Roach suid that, strictly de- llncd, tills nation is a representa tive democracy and not a pure democracy. "To function as a rep resentative democracy, tile pe«iple must know whut they want, must lie free to express these want* uml must be interested enough to express them," Miss Rouch said. "Mince a representative govern ment must Is- bucked by an in- formed public, the league strives to increase participatbai In gov ernment, to teach proper partici pation and to improve the quality of the electorate. Since this coun try has a tradition of lack of in terest in governmental affairs, and of too much pressure by spe cial hitcri-Ht groups, the league endeavors to counteract these in fluences to some extent by having a i epresentatlve membership which promotes legislation only after it is thoroughly understmxi and legislation which it believes to lx* for the best interests of the most people," in order to keep its member ship well Informed on happenings at the national capitol, the league keeps a full time secret«« y st a Uoned there Miss Roach states that the league is the only wom en's group which does this.
