formlty with specifications adopt
ed by the automobile industry in
its development of the new "sealed
beam" headlamp system, it was
announced thia week by Earl Snell,
secretary of stale, who played a
part in the nationwide study which
led to the development of the new
lamps
The new headlamps are designed
to give increased visibility for
night driving, longer and more ef
ficient service at no increased
mileage cost, and virtual elimina
tion of glare They were developed
as a result of a three-year study
instituted by the automobile indus
try, the Automotive Safety foun
dation and the American Associa
tion of Motor Vehicle Administra
tors
The design of the new lamp dif
fers from the present standard
lamp in that the reflector, lens
and light source are In one com
pact unit, permanently sealed to
prevent dust or moisture from en
tering the unit They are said to
give a wider and longer range of
light while the up|>er or "country
beam" is employed and a longer
range along the right shoulder of
the highway and reduced glare to
the eyes of approaching drivers
while the lower or "traffic beam"
la employed.
As an official in the western
division of the American Associa
tion of Motor Vehicle Administra
tors. Snell participated In com
mittee work during the develop
ment of the new light
"The new sealed beam headlight
system is an outstanding cooper
ative achievement and will take
its place among such important
automotive contributions to high
way safety as four-wheel brakes,
safety glass and all-steel body con
struction," declared Snell "It is
a major step toward the objective
of safer and easier night driving
"While the new system is re
garded as a substantial step tow
ard the ultimate solution of the
night illumination problem, it
should be made clear that the au
tomotive Industry and the various
safety agencies do not necessarily
regard the sealed beam lamp as
ths complete solution. Future im
provements unquestionably will
take place, but for the present
the new lamps undoubtedly repre
sent an important advance ”
With the reflector bulb and lens
of the new lamp being assembled
in a single permanently sealed
unit, neither dust nor moisture
can get in the reflector and reduce
the efficiency of the lamp, Snell
pointed out. tn the standard lamps
now in service, these elements cut
down the density of illumination
by as much as one-third after
three years or more use, unless
the reflector and lens are frequent
ly cleaned and polished, it is said.
The unit may be adjusted for
height and width by two screws
and are designed to throw a wider
light than the present type. When
the "country beam" la used, ob
jects 350 feet ahead will be much
more clearly defined and the side
of the road will be better lighted
On the "traffic beam" the light la
thrown farther and wider on the
right aide of the road, but the
left side of the beam does not hit
the eye of the approaching driver
with the intensity of the present
lamps
When the filament of the light
bums out, the entire unit is re
placed and while the coat of the
unit is somewhat more than the
cost of a single bulb, the lamp is
said to last much longer with the
result that the cost per mile is no
greater than with the present
bulbs
At the last session of the Ore
gon legislature the state's law re
garding automotive lights was
changed so that the new lamps
could be used here The study
made by the industry revealed the
need of greater power than pro-
vlded in the 32-candlepower bulbs
permitted in most states and
thnough the cooperation of Motor
Vehicle administrators group, all
state laws were adjusted to the !

One medium-sized ripe tomato
will furnish about half a day's
requirement for vitamin C (ascor
bic acid) and about one-fifth of
the vitamin A needs for the day
In addition it will contribute some
vitamin Bl, vitamin G and the
pellagra preventative vitamin.

In 1H93 held that a tomato is a
vegetable, even though botanlcally
it Is a fruit Regardless of that,
it is dietetic-ally one of the cheap
est and best sources of food rich
in vitamins.
Tomatoes are one of the vege
tables easiest to can successfully
at home. Miss Case points out.
And, according to a recent experi
ment of the federal bureau of
home economics, tomatoes put up
by
recommended home-canning
methods, even though they lose
some of their vitamin C in stor
age after canning, still rate as a
good source of that vitamin.
Unlike most vegetables, toma
toes are an acid food. Therefore
they need not be processed in a
steam pressure canner Instead,
processing in a water bath for a
reasonable length of time will kill
any trouble-making bacteria that
happen to be present
Ideal tomatoes for canning are
firm, ripe, of a fine red color and
free from decay. Skin the toma-
toes and core them then pack into
glass jars or tin cans. Be careful
to remove every bit of the green
core which might cause spoilage if
left in the tomato To can them
"cold-pack," put them as closely
as possible Into the containers,
preferably In tin to prevent access
of air. Add one teaspoon of salt
for every quart, fill the can or jar

The Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana,
Idaho and Colorado made their
plantings for windbreaks Nevada,
apparently, did not plant a tree.
