Page 2 SOUTHERN OREGON MINER SAFE DRIVING HINTS URGED Ten timely proverbs to warn motorists against too much aut umn speed were issued by Secre tary of State Earl Snell, who is receiving cooperation from news papers and public agencies throughout the state in an effort to reduce last-quarter automobile accidents. Here they are doubtless other "proverbs' will occur to the reader as he scans this list: 1. A few hot toddies may relieve your cold, but they won’t help traffic congestion. 2. Mr. Motorist: You may hold your own life cheaply, but you can set no value on the lives of others. 3. What if you're not there for the kick-off? You don't want to be listed among the big-gume cas ualties. 4. Are you a reckless driver, or are you a wreckless driver? 5. Holiday hint: If you have to use alcohol, pour it into the rad iator. 6. Beef about the other fellow's driving if it helps you drive bet ter yourself 7. If you try to save half an hour today, you may have an eter nity to spend it in. 8. A wet road is bad enough—a "wet" driver is worse. 9. Caution is an inexpensive lux ury-; indulge in it more often. 10. Brake your car before you break your neck—you'll feel much better afterward. Friday, November 12, 1937 Neglect of farm machinery costing American farmers n lions of dollars annually, says W J. Gilmore, head of the agricultur al engineering department at Ore gon State college. Few machines : actually wear out, but many are rutted or rusted out, he pointed ' out. Good care of farm machinery calls for protection from the weather by housing, protection of the parts subject to rust or decay, and repairing, adjusting and re placing of parts, he says. A shelter for farm machines needs only to be adequate to pro tect from moisture, sun and dust, and a simple building with wide doors for easy storage or removal of machines is desirable. Professor Gilmore points out. If space is at a premium, poles or tongues and cveners can be removed without disturbing other parts. Professor Gilmore offers a few suggestions on storing harvesting machinery It is especially desirable to place the mower, binder and combine under shelter to avoid high depreciation and repair costs, he says. r When storing, a block under the ■ center of the tongue may keep it from warping If the mower is stored with the cutter bar in a vertical position it is well to place a block under the I inner show to relieve lifting parts. 1 If stored with the cutter bar ! down, unhook the lifting spring This fall coat bj Worth is a tweed , If bar is tilted so that pitman is model in pastel shades and noi th, j under a strain it may take a per- least of its charm is its simple lire» I manent twist and cause trouble Interesting features are the rounded | later lapel treatment and patch ■ Combine and binder canvases may be removed and placed in a dry place away from mice and rats, It is well to clean off the dirt, tighten loose belts, spread cotters, grease wearing parts, Major H D. While farm foreclosures have decreased in Oregon in recent years, many farmers are still han dicapped with debts beyond the capacity of the farm to pay. As b»,th the creditor and debtor lose through foreclosure, every effort is made to bring about adjust ments whereby the debt may be paid in full and still leave enough income to provide an adequate liv ing for the family. Farmers in need of the service are urged to make application for advisory aid before foreclosure proceedings have been instituted, if possible. Creditors are equally welcome in applying for debt ad justment services where it is pos sible to work out a satisfactory solution to avoid the expense of foreclosure proceedings. -MOORE HAMILTON VISITS .Moore Hamilton, editor of the Medford News, was an Ashland caller late Thursday While here he paid a visit to The Miner of fice. • • Mrs. Eric Huschke returned ' Wednesday evening from Payette, | Ida., where she has visited for • Avery Trask of Lakeview ar several weeks with her parents i rived Wednesday evening and vis and other relatives. ited Armistice day at the .Jean Hastings residence • Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Lininger and I Raymond Lininger returned Sun day evening from Klamath Falls.
