*’ ingly strong gang of Grizzlie
footballers will find their work cut
out for them tills afternoon when
limy meet "Tut" Tuttle's Granta
Pass Cavemen In the first official
game of the Southern Oregon con-
ference
It was no particular upset for
the locals to trounce Yreka last
week The surprising thing was
the fact that they developed from
a listless, ragged team to one
which was a lulu in ull depart
ments of play to do it.
Of course, we all suspected that
the ixiys had potentialities but to
have
them
develop
so
much
strength in a single week since
the Weed debacle Is like waking
in the morning to find it raining
on one side of the house and clear
on the other It can't hap|M-n
but there it Is!
In spite of the fact that Grants
Puss took It on the chin, 6-0, from
North Bend In their opener, It will
not be wine for the O'Connellrnen
to figure today's game a cinch
Oregon State turned out a pretty
fine pair of athletes in I^orcn Tut
tle and George Hibbard, and with
the help of George Erickson in
making a team from a student
body of over 700 student a they
can he depended U[ mui to have a
lusty bunch of Cavemen, al) holler
ing for raw Bed and White meat'

As for the team Itself, it's a
crying shame that boys like the
Grizzlies must show In a mess of
worn-out uniforms which make
tin* gridiron look more like a har
vested uutoumn cornfield every
time a substitute player comes
Into the game dressed like a
scarecrow!
It must be admitted that there
are an even dozen Jerseys out
there which )<x>k pretty nice It
alao must be admitted and point
ed to with pride that the school
board
unlimbered
the
pucker
string on the athletic fund purse
lids week to buy 9100 worth of
practice Jerseys, and some harness
which will protect the team from
unnecessary Injuries
Now it Mena to I m * up to
the public to attend the games
more
faithfully—back
the
team—swell the gates—arid
give the student body enough
money to buy outfits of which
we cun I m * proud instead of
ashamed. No one In Ashland
11 is si ever I m * ashamed of the
way the kids play!

Yreka high, situated In u smaller
town than this, invaded Ashland
.Saturday with about 35 players
outfitted like a college team, new
Jerseys, team blunkets and every-
i thing And even though the Mln-
. ers were losers they were cheered
by a large and effective band,
each member of which was In uni
form.
Maybe Steve Fowler wouldn't
lilt the line any harder In a new
suit, nor Furman Garter pass any
better Perhaps Warren, Gregory,
Gettling, Brady and the rest of
I lie first string are Just as classy
players as they come, but it's dol
lars to doughnuts that the second
string would perform a whole lot
better If they didn't have to take
the field labeled by their raga-
rnuffin clothing as scrubs And the
whole bunch would get a lot more
fun out of putting on their show
in classy uniforms before a ca
pacity crowd

slated as favorites to beat the Al

been used as a football doormat
for longer than the oldest inhabi
