When old Abe Griggsby passed away
To seek the golden portal,

To such a common mortal?”
For he had never done a deed
To live in song or story;
Had never made a foeman bleed
On field of battle gory.
He built no library, no church,
Endowed no school or chapel;
He put no peace dove on the perch,
For wealth he did not grapple.

For old Abe’s earthly labor.
And someone said, “Well, anyway,
He was a right good neighbor.”
Ah, what thing better could be said
For one of mortal vision
When from its cage the sould had fled
To bask in fields Elysian?
