by the board of directors of the
Ashlund chamber of commerce,

ler's department store wax chosen
us president of the boost organiza
tion to succeed Dr. Bernard G.
Barkwill, who handed in his res
ignation at the same meeting.
Dr. Burkwlll is leaving for the
east soon for further medical
studies. The term of Mr. Forlmil-
ler will expire next March. At the
next meeting of the directors, Sep
tember 30, another member for
that body will be named by the
board to fill Dr. Barker’s place as

In a bulletin statement issued
to the membership of the organiza
tion Tuesday. Mr. Fortmiller said;
“It is my sincere hope that the
members of this organization will
prove to be as helpful to me as
they were to my predecessor, and
us your president, I will welcome
any suggestions that you can make
to me or to any other member of
the board.
"At our next regular meeting
we will select some one of our
members to serve on the board of
directors until the next general
election. We will all appreciate any
help you can give us regarding this
selection.
"The chamber of commerce is
now ready to open the fall season
after a summer devoted mainly to
toured promotion work. We will
have a number of announcements
to be made In the coming weeks
concerning our activities, some of
which we believe will prove to be
of interest to all our members.
"The success of any chamber of
commerce depends primarily upon
the Interest and activity of its
members. We trust that you will
do your share and help your or
ganization, and investigate before
condemning."

It Would Free Bear
Creek From Pollution
Bear Creek, which once rippled
merrily along amid scenes of verd
ure and cleanliness, may again see
such good old times restored if ef-
fotts of valley towns and cities to
secure sewage disposal plants are
successful.
One such plant is now under
construction at Medford. Other
cities and towns that have filed ap
plications with the PWA for dis
posal plants are Ashland, Talent,
and Central Point. The I*WA of
fers to pay 45 per cent of the cost,
and loan the balance at small rate
of interest and on long time. Steps
are also expected to be taken for
a plant at Phoenix .
The change to modem methods
of sewage disposal from methods
which seem almost medieval would
appear to be desirable. It would
cost some money of course, but not
nearly so much if the change were
found to be an absolute necessity
after the PWA had ceased to func
tion.
