PRACTICING ON OSCAR
They were just three baby sparrows In need of protection when
Frances A. Urban, fourteen-year-old high school girl, saw them flop­
ping about helplessly In her back yard In Hollywood,. Calif., and decided
to befriend them. At her home, the girl placed them In a cage near a
window. A day later she heard a flutter and saw a grown sparrow, then
two, beating wildly against the screen. Suspecting the visitors were the
birds' parents, she placed the cage In the yard nnd opened the door.
One of the grown birds flew In with worms and fed them. Each day.
now. they are taken into the yard to be fed In that fashion. The girl
plans to release the birds as soon as they are able to fly.
Her Birthday Party in the Air

life-sized figures representing the typical American and his wife, were
welcomed to Japan by "Mr. Fuji Nippon” nnd "Miss Sakurako,” the
typical Japanese boy and girl. The American dolls were sent to Japan
entrusted with the mission of cementing friendship between Japan nnd
the United States.

An act of congress
dating back to 1818 provides that
on admission of a new state to the
Union, one star shall be added.
Such additions are required by that
law to be made or to take effort
on the Fourth of July following
