An earnest invitation is being sent out from Ash- land for all, near ad far. to attend our July 4 celebration next week. Visitors are urged to make uoc of ,» this v...» city's --________ _____ Lithia park, to en use incomparable joy the many features arranged for the day, and to rest, play and spend their shekels with us. A fine program has been arranged by the cele bration committee, starting with Angus Bowmer's Shakespearean plays July 2, 3 and 4. on down through a long list of parades, races, picnics, mu sic. baseball games, boxing, beauty contest, street dances and free fireworks display which undoubt edly will attract thousands of people here for the events. In years past, Ashland has built up a fine and enviable tradition of hospitality which deserves to be jealously maintained. Ashlanders should plan at least part of their holiday this year to include their own festivities; they should "buy Ashland" all the time, including July 4th! You never heard of a good host who went visiting every time he threw a party. ------------------ •----------------- k Are You A Foolish Fire Fancier? Speaking of parades, if Ashland can get as much interest aroused in the forthcoming holiday as semblage as she does in the processions which dog heels of fire trucks as they make their runs, then the celebration will go down in history as something or other. The other evening, just at the dinner hour, Ash land's equipment was called out East Main to what turned out to be a very inconsequential grass fire but, judging from the frenzied racing of cars, bi cycles and shouting pedestrians streaming in and out of the hazardous traffic, one would think per dition itself was ablaze and threatening the city. Firemen said later that a half dozen passenger cars beat them to the scene and that by the time they could climb down off their truck a half hun dred panting motorists and sightseers were block ing all possible avenues of travel or gyration. Then the very next evening, when the equipment ran to a residence blaze, by the time police—who had been in another part of town at time of the alarm—could arrive at the scene, cars had all pos- LEGAL NOTICE In the County Court of the State of Oregon for Jackson County IN THE MATTER OF THE ES TATE OF W. Corthell and to all other heirs and devisees unknown, if any there be of the above named W. A Corthell, some times known as Wellman A. Cor thell, deceased. IN THE NAME OF THE STATE OF OREGON: You are hereby commanded to appear be fore the County Court of the state of Oregon for Jackson county on July 31st, 1935 at 10:00 o’clock a.m. in the courtroom of said court at Medford, Oregon and then and there show cause, if any exists, why an order should not be made authorizing and directing the exe cutor of the above entitled estate to sell all of the following de scribed personal and real property at private sale to-wit: PERSONAL PROPERTY Certificate of Stock No. SFH- 56695 of Trans-America Corpora tion for six (6) shares, value >5.00 per share; dated Oct. 25, 1929 and registered Oct. 25, 1929 at Bank of Italy, now Bank of America, San Francisco, California; REAL PROPERTY Beginning at a point on the easterly aide line of the Southern Pacific rialroad right of way 115.5 feet south, 40 degrees 30 minutes east of the northwest corner of the Barclay residence lot in the town of Talent, said corner of said resi dence lot being at the point of in tersection of the center line of the Wagner Creek county road with the easterly line of the rightofway of the Oregon and California rail road, and running thence north 40 degrees 30 minutes west on the easterly line of said railroad right sible traffic blocked for hundreds of feet, even lin ing alleys and lots near the blaze. Owners had de camped from their vehicles and. had it been neces sary to run additional hose, firemen would have been baffled by the maze of motors with no drivers parked haphazardly at strategic points. According to Chief of Police Talent, it is strictly against city ordinance to pursue, overtake or even approach a fire truck out on call. It not only is against city ordinance to jam vicinity of fires with parked vehicles, but also foolhardy, and behavior of several hundred Ashlanders who answer the siren's scream with a burst from their exhaust pipes is befitting only moronic stupids who shouldn’t be trusted out with kiddy cars. Next time you hear the snorting rush of fire equipment, quell that impulse to join the merry melee and pause long enough to watch the parade go by. If it doesn't give you the nervous jitters and make you swear to never act like that again, then the Southern Oregon Miner will buy you. free, an accident and life Insurance policy, for you'll most certainly need It. It is bad enough to have the fire demon eating away at our business buildings and residences, but it is’ far worse to have a fire gong as starting signal for a race with death with half the mobile town tak ing part. And as far as risks go, we believe an insurance company would take less chance insuring a blazing building than they would covering ve hicles and lives of those rushing pell-mell down a narrow city street behind the fire truck to get to it One would think that good judgment would tell a person how foolish it is to streak out for a fire, and that evils of such thoughtlessness and risk would be apparent, but at least here in Ashland seriousness of the folly has not made its proper impression. Parades are fine and admirable things, but not parades of fools following q fire truck. Duck, Here Comes the Five-Ten Welcome the 3-C’s! It is seldom we can observe as many young men gathered together in any section of the country who stay as clear of trouble as do the CCC enrollees, 3000 of whom are expected to be guests of the city of Ashland next Thursday, when this city will ex tend itself as a holiday host. Gathered together from many distant sections of the United States, with their first qualification being only the need for a Job, it is remarkable how well behaved, how constructive Uncle Sam's Brush Marines have turned out to be. Discipline, good be havior and a healthy attitude characterizes the khaki-clad civilians who devote six months of their time to touching up Mother Nature, and the sys tem by which they are governed, the officers and enrollees themselves deserve our admiration and our appreciation. It is quite fitting that Ashland should extend a special invitation to the tree troopers to take part in the forthcoming celebration, which finds its root in patriotism and appreciation of gov- erament. In addition to being special guests, the 3-C's will take a large part in observance of the day. Brush Marines furnishing all material for the 42 rounds of boxing which will be one of the day's main fea tures. It is needless to point out that the CCC have been taking an important part in improvement and upbuilding of the northwest. Let's remember a special welcome for these busy citizens whom the government has taken as spe cial employes, for they are moulding forests and men and futures. of way 115.5 feet more or less to the said northwest corner of the said Barclay residence lot; thence north 36 degrees east along the said center line of the said Wag ner Creek county road 97.75 feet; thence south 52 degrees 30 minutes east at right angles with said Wagner Creek county road a dis tance of 109 feet 7 inches, thence in a southwesterly direction 118.25 feet more or less to the point of beginning, in Jackson county, Ore gon.
