Townsend Picnic
Is Huge Success;
Hundreds Attend
The Townsend club basket pic-
nic, held in Ashland’s Lithia park
Sunday. June 15, was a decided
success, according to Townsend
Revolving fund pension advocates.
There was a large crowd present
for the dinner, at which 60 gal
lons of coffee was consumed, made
by Clarence Lane and Sherman
Ftowell.
Entertainment committees’ part
of the program began at 2:15 when
Gray and Wolcott produced several
old-time selections on violin and
guitar. The Ashland male quartet
followed with a number of appro
priate songs.
Mr. Van Weagin of Medford
gave a roping exhibition and Miss
Sewell, also of Medford, told of
her Townsend club's growth to 705
members in seven months. Mr.
Oliver of Medford gave several in
teresting and entertaining selec
tions, imitating birds, bees, lions,
cats and a host of others including
W. J. Bryan’s Chicago speech. W.
M. Perry, Medford, made a short
and able talk on the Townsend
Revolving pension plan.
C. B. Lamkin gave a short talk,
using a farmer’s comparison of
hoarded dollars to a pile of manure
in his lot, which was no good until

‘Silver Streak’ New
Exciting Story At
Lithia Today, Sat
"The Silver Streak,” an excit
ing yam of the new streamline
trains that have been in the news
so much lately, heads a double bill
at the Lithia theater Friday and
Saturday. This program is one
that will appeal to every member
of the family. The other feature is
the latest of the Philo Vance stor
ies bringing a new Philo to the
screen, Paul Lukas. Lukas inter
prets the role in his own charming
way and is ably supported by a
cast that includes Alison Skip
worth, Louise Fazenda, Arthur
Byron and many others who are
dependable for the way they al
ways put over a picture. The com
edy is by that old master of the
ludicrous, Ted Healy.
Sunday brings the foremost mu
sical of the season, “Naughty Mar
ietta" the operetta of Victor Her
bert that has endeared itself to all
Americans. It is presented as a
glorious pageant of drama, mirth
and beauty—mightier than any
musical yet seen on the screen. It
will thrill eevryone with its glit
tering extravagance. You’ll laugh
I at its bright comedy and you’ll
cheer those new sweethearts. Jean
ette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy,
who find their love in a new world
of exciting adventure.

ADVERTISING DOES PAY!
A Missouri woman advertised In
a newspaper for a husband and got
one at the cost of $9. He enlisted
in the army and was killed, leav
ing his widow $3000 and a substan
tial widow's pension as long as
she lives. And there still are those
who think advertising does not
pay!
