BUNKS “How to Be An Editor” With a pocket knife, a file and a midget plane as bis only tools, .Jack Hulse, Applegate’s jack knife carpenter, is producing archery sets of superb workmanship, which are a source of pride to the boy or man—or even a lady—owning a set. The shining bows and arrows, sandpapered and varnished to the last degree of perfection, are prod ucts of long hours of scientific whit tling—out under a tree, by the fire place—wherever the work goes on, they become the fruits of unusual ■kill. Mr. Hulse says that he has made bows and arrows since he was a boy. About 45 years ago he learned the art from the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian boys in the ter ritory which has since become Ok lahoma. There, the bows were made of Bois D’Arc wood, more familiarly known as the Osage orange tree. Only within the last two years has Mr. Hulse been making sets in the Applegate, which resulted from the intense interest in arch ery displayed by his friend, Wil liam Jones of Medford, well-known bow fan. From the talent of these two men. several other Big Apple gate men caught the spark of en thusiasm and have enjoyed making sets for themselves and members of their families, including their wives. Archery was the chief form of recreation at the government road camp on Beaver last summer, where James Arnold and Lyal (Slim) Hards were believed to be champions. When Mr. Hulse has completed his present orders he will have sold eight sets to his friends and ac quaintances during the summer and fall, the largest sets with a six- foot bow selling for $6. Several of these sets, ordered by a Medford man, will gladden many young hearts on Christmas morning, which fact reminded Mr. Hulse that he, too. will be caught in the Christ mas rush if he doesn’t hasten with his work. Mr. Hulse’s description of the in tricate process of the work is in tensely interesting. The bows are made of yew wood, and an eight inch maple tree split into pieces furnishes the arrows.
