The British ship Kynance has arrived
at San Francisco 185 days from Antwerp,
after a stormy passage. On reaching
port the, sailors painted In large letters
the words "Starvation" and "Hunger."
and then deserted. They complained of
the quantity and quality of the food, and
displayed the signs with the hope that
no other sailors could be prooured to
take their places. -
The Columbia completed yesterday un
loading her 950 tons of general merchan
dise which she brought from San Fran
cisco on' this trip. She Is receiving her
return cargo and will be ready .to leave
out tonight on schedule time. First
Mate Doran- is seriously ill la San Fra
clsco, and his position Is being filled by a
Mr. Merriam, who was formerly captain

The steamer Homer,. Captain Langrod,
was due to arrive here today from San

take a cargo of building material to

where' a new lighthouse is being con
structed. The vessel will take . on sup
plies at the Gray Steamship Company's
dock in Portland but will get her lum

A Camas Transportation Company's line,
which has been undergoing repairs for
the past six weeks at the Portland Ship
building yards. Is about completed and
will be ready to go on her regular run
