these gentlemen were present on the

ing delivered the opening address,. In
which he gave utterance to the samy sen
timent, and urged tha,t a strong reason
for electing Mr. Furnish was to kssp a
Democrat from being Governor during
the Lewis and Clark .Exposition, and
these gentlemen did not even .dissent
from such a use of what was thought
to be a noa-partlsan Institution. ,
.They therefore must endorse the senti
ment, and thus they sink the Exposition
to the low level of partisan ' politics.
Many Republicans, as well as Demo
crate, will Vt against Mr. Furnish be
cause r they want ta. defeat ring rule In
the State, and emancipate their State
and party from boss control, worse than
anything that has dominated the State,
and if . those autu-Ud by (his purpose
and opposed jo Mr. Furnish are to be de
prived, oCpartlclpatton in the Exposi

Should, It be encouraged at all? It 18
now up, to the management of the Ex
position. No protest l" been uttered by
them. Do they intend to acquiesce in

Eastbound Rates Advanced.
Saturday saw the finish of the passen
ger rate meeting at the O. R. & N". Com
pany's offices, attended by representa
tives of the several transcontinental
lines. It was called, it will be remem
bered, to Una up the rates on through
business, made necessary by the settling
between the Boo Line and the Chlcago
St Paul lines of their differences in the
matter of New England rates. -
. As the result of the meeting an exten
sive circular Jhaa been issued by the O.
R. A N. Company, which materially ad
vances the fares on East bound business.
These became effective yesterday. They
apply, from Portland and Puget Sound
and from Spokane to point in Connecti
cut, District of Columbia Delaware,
Maine; Maryland. Massachusetts. Michi
gan, New Brunswick, New Hampshire,
New Jersey, New York, Ohio. Ontario,
Pennsylvania; Quebec, Rhode Island,
Vermont, Virginia,

when the nth annual state encampment
Ot the a A. K. opened. These visitors
include the delegates of the Ladles' Aid
Society, the Sons of Vetetans, the Worn
an's Relief Corps and the Ladles of the
O. A. R., all of which organisations are
holding their respecUve annual meetings
here at . this time. The delegates began
arriving late last night, and this morn
ing special trains Over all i the roads
brought In more than 8000 visitors, while
all regular trains furnished large dele
gations.
The encampment will be formally
opened with a mass meeting in the Audi
torium toniiht. Governor Cummins and
Mayor Hartenbower will deliver the ad
dresses of welcome, and Department
Commander George MeUger ot Davenport
will deliver the address In response:

FREEHOLD, N. J., May 20.-There
was a large attendance of well-known
shots this morning at the opening of the
annual tournament of the New Jersey
Btate Sportsmen's Association. Some ex
cellent scores were made in the five tar
get events which comprised the morn
ing's programme. This afternoon the In
dividual state championship, at 60 tar
gets, is being shot off. The tournament
continues until Saturday.
MINES AND MINING.
The Caswell brothers and partner, A.
O. Huntley, a relative, have sold their
famous claim, known to Thunder Moun
tain pioneers as the Sunnyslde, and sit
uated on the east slope of Thunder
Mountain hill, to the Belle of Thunder
Mountain Company of Pittsburg for
$125,000.
Tbs working force at the Bonanta
mine has been reduced to 36 men for the
time being. All efforts are being centered
on the sinking of a new shaft. The
company will move the town of Gelser,
this spring, closer to the works. ,
J. K. Ronlg has secured a lyase on 00
mining claims, situated on Rock creek,
Bumpter district, for 18 months for $128,
000. Reports from a reliable source state
that Emll Gramenapacher. . partner of
William Parker, owners of the Wloter
vllle placer mines, situated three miles
from Gelser and four miles ffom Win
tervllle, recently took out a nugget which
weighed $420. These placer mines have
been producing for 86 years. Last sum
mer Mr. Parker took out a mllkpao. full
of nuggets, and it is said that the mine
has paid over $20,000 a year, net profit,
for a long time.
The big strike in the Golconda calls
to mind a similar circumstance in con
nection with the Bonanaa mine, which
happened a couple of years' ago. The
pay chute had been lost and, after much
searching, waa not found tor many
months. Afterward, plans were changed
and crosscuts run In different directions
from the original plans, and the rich ore"
was struck. Both of theee properties are
leaders in Eastern Oregon.
The extensive underground work at the
Gem mine In the, pioneer Sparta district,
about SO mllea eastward,, of Baker City,
comprises a total In shaftstunnels. up
raises and stopes of between 6,000 and
7,000 feet. The main shaft Is down SOO
feet Work on the vein of three to four
feet In width has been well rewarded.
' One ot the most Important happenings
in the history of the gold fields of East
ern Oregon occurred the other, day when
betweeen the second and. third levels of
the Golconda mine, on Cracker Creek, a
continuation of the rich ore-ohute of
1899, was encountered. This means that
the value of tho Golconda has lumped in
one day from $2SO,000 to a million dollars.
. E, G. Stevenaon, of RobinsdnvlUe, has
bonded the' Intrlnslo mine, In the Green
horns, for $40,000 from G. .WV Weidler and
Julius Ordway. of Portland, - and X C.
Powers, of Roblnsonvllle. SJsvenson is
backed by a strong Eastern syndicate
and will develop the property to a pro
ducing basis. Power driiis and air pump
will be Installed for driving the present
lower tunnel, which is now in $00,. 1,100
feet further, giving, backs of 760 feat. .
, The Spring Gap group Of claims, one
and one-half miles south of the celebrat
ed Virtue mine, ih the Bumpter district
has peen sold to It Aldren of Spokane.
