cal Duty After Oeafta
The story of bow Sidney Foster, C erst
while a living Republican worker ot
Portland, long since dead, did good politi
cal work In the Republican primaries 4
the city long after death waa wen known
In political olrclee several year ago. and
has been revived by tho nomination y
the Republicans of Henry X. MeOln or
the 8tate Senate,. 'f
A half decad ago, while Medina was
in close communion with that wing, at the
party that he most heartily lights now,
it was denired by the bosses 'and by Mc
Ginn that he should be a delegate to '
county convention. The slate-maker were
afraid to put his nam on tho ticket
because of his personal unpopularity Jn
his ward, so the Republicans got the
hint all along tne line to vote for Sidney
Foster for delegate.
No one seemed to know . who Sidney
Foster was, but McGinn and the commit
tee vouched for him and said: Wote
for Foster, he's a good man."
Foatar was -elected, but still oo one
knew where he lived, or What was bis
occupation, Foster , waa a mystery, but
he waa elected s delegate all the same.
Convention 'day arrived and etui no one
knew any more of Foster than before.
Most of the other delegates. looked for
ward to the convention with piessure,'
because they, expected ft meet. Sidney
Foster. ... . .'L.h:'1::
Foster did not materialise, but In bis
stead and bearing his proxy was the
ublqultou Henry E. McGinn.' 'a
The incident was discussed for soma
time and the mystery of Sidney Foster's
personality waa not solved -...
A year later a gentleman Of Portland
waa In the town of Sprague, wash,, and
to kill time took a stroll through the
village, graveyard. In looking over tho
monumentaand reading the inscriptions
that were written of the dead, he was
surprised to .find sn epitaph as follows:
tt ...i ...........
In Memory of
SIDNEY FOSTER,

Died May SO, 1878.
He was a good man.
