O ne o f th e ch ild ren w h o had been
a pupil o f th e sch o o l for 6 m on th s
a n d w a s ab le to s a y a fe w w ord s ,
c o m p a r e d to her fo r m e r sta te of
to ta l m u t e n e s s . T h e m ore a d van ced
p u p ils w e r e able to sp ea k a full
sentence.
Mr. B o le y in s tig a t e d the school
a f t e r h is o w n ch ild b eca m e d e a f
fr o m a s e v e r e Illness. T ra v elin g
th r o u g h th e e a st h e saw several
s i m il a r s c h o o ls in operation.
H e c o n c ie v e d the idea of a n oral
sc h o o l for P o r tla n d and w a s able
to in t e r e st a n u m b er in th e prop­
o sitio n .

th e a u c tio n o f a $1200 ele ctric
