Work is progressing on the new Sunset Highway being built from the Washington County line on S. W. Canyon road through North Plains and on out to Banks | where it will link with the pres ent Coast highway. This is a $1,250,000 State'and Federal project with funds coming partly from Federal sources and partly from the Ore gon State Highway Commission. This is part of Oregon’s streamlining road program which is sorely needed, ¡tlnce lack of materials and manpower made it impossible to work on the roads during the war. This lack of road upkeep, coupled with the increase in population has resulted in a highway system behind the times. When the Sunset Highway is finished traffic on the Canyon road will be very much relieved. It Is estimated it will be over a year until the highway will be completed and open to the public Work has been progressing on the far end of the road from North Plains to Banks for about two years, since early 1940. where the Rogers Construction Co., of Dayton, Wash., and the Sound Construction Co., of Se attle is building the road. Porter Yett Construction Co., was given the contract for the construction of the road from the county line on S. W. Canyon Road, west to North Plains This Includes grading and surfacing as well as building the bridges, structures and electrical install ations. At Commonwealth Community Center, near where the Sunset Highway and Cedar Street in tersect, there will be a “clover leaf entrance” and underpass to handle the traffic on and off the road The highway will be four lane from Cedar Street into the S. W. Canyon Rodd. An underpass has been con strutted under Shoefly trestle on the Southern Pacific line, and the Merle overcrossing on Walker Rood. Poor drainage conditions in the valley are causing a great deal of trouble to the road builders since they cause “soft cuts” that slow construction and make it impossible to travel the length of the road over the existing dirt grade. Porter Yett Construction Co., are working now on the cut leading into the S. W. Canyon Road and the fill. Just beyond the cut is a strong R E T U R N IN G T O O R E G O N Mrs. Paul Prudhomme return ed recently from Honolulu, HawqiL where she has been living since May, while Mr. Prudhomme was working In the Bank of Hawaii.
