The bill, No. Hit 3254, in addi tion to reimbursing the Medical Officers for the cost of their professional education, and com pensating them for their loss of earning power during such pe riod is designed to raise the quality of medical care in the Navy by increasing the number of medical specialists. It provides for the payment to Medical Officers of $100 for each completed month of active serv ice in addtion to any pay, allow ances, or emoluments they are otherwise entitled to receive. A possible result of careless pro cedures in home canning of some foods is the deadly type of food poisoning known as botulism. Botulism is caused by a germ called botulinum bacillus which may grow in non-acid foods, or foods of low acidity, to produce a poisonous toxin. A very small amount of botulism can cause death. No one should ever taste canned foods in which bubbles of gas, a rancid odor or a soft ened appearance of solid parts are noticed. Anyone who suspects he may have any type of food poisoning should call the doctor immediate ly. In the case of botulism this is especially necessary because the appropriate antitoxin is ef fective only within 24 hours aft er the poisoned food has been eaten. Unfortunately, the symp- tons of botulism sometimes do not appear until 48 hours after a person eats the poisoned food, but they may appear anytime within the perid of four to 48 hours after ingestion. The symp toms are weakness, dizziness, double vision, drooping of the upper eyelid, paralysis of the eye muscles and difficulty in swal lowing and respiration. The cran ial nerves are paralyzed and in coordination Is common. There is obstinate constipation. There is no fever, but in the latter stage there is rapid respiration with labored breathing and a slow pulse. As a precaution against botu lism in home canning, house wives should be careful to use firm, fresh fruit and crisp vege tables that have been thoroughly cleaned, and meat that is in sound condition. Fruits and vege tables should be canned as soon as possible after they have been picked or gathered. It Is safer to pressure cook foods which are to lie canned because the intense heat kills the germ-* ^^fore auy non acid food canned without a pressure cooker is eaten, it should lie reboiled for at least 15 minutes. Botulism in commerciallv can- ¡ned products is practically non- i existent, because commercial Scanners carefully control heating and timing to insure killing the polson-lnproducing germs.
