The event Will be an all day- affair beginning at 10:00 a.m., re­ ports Joe Cox, assistant county agent. Club members will plant 83 Norway Maple trees on the new fairgrounds. The trees were pre­ sented to the fair board by » prominent Portland nurseryman, and the forestry club members an opportunity to do the planting. This is the first step in the beautification of the new fair­ grounds. The trees will be planted in a border around the area with a view toward permanently beau­ tifying the site. Club members should bring lunches with them as it will be an all day affair. All county 4-H ! club members are invited to come and join in the project. In an article which he wrote fo r the A p ril issue o f Cos­ m opolitan m agazine, Mr. Ruml explains that w hile he be­ lieves that our next depression w ill come in A p ril, 1948, it need not come, and events may prove his prophecy incorrect. “ When the depression comes, will come as a spasm after a long period o f creeping and wasting pa­ ralysis o f both consumption and employment,” he writes. “ There will be no specific event, no catas­ trophe, no bolt from the blue. But instead, on this A p ril afternoon in 1948, some prominent name will cry out, ‘ F or goodness sake, this is no recession we’re having—it’s a de­ pression.’ And history will record that the depression of 1948 began at that moment o f time.” In support o f his statement, Mr. Ruml declares that the basis for our present prosper. ty has been weakened, and that therefore we cannot expect it to last. “ W e must produce more in 1947 1 than we did in 1946 to have full em­ ployment in 1947,’ ’ hv declares. “ W e were able to sell what we pro­ duced in 1946 as a result of four strong abnormal forces operating in 1946— reconversion expenditures, inventory building, net export abroad, and lower government re­ ceipts than expenditures during most o f the year.
