stem s from the
con tribu tion
o f religion
und-or
science. Our
standard o f living,
m oreover, should refute the age-
old argum ent that new inventions
incieabe unem ploym ent. Kach in
vention m ay at first cause an in
terruption in em ploym ent.
Yet,
eventually it becom es necessary
to hire m ore w orkers to take care
o f the increased business which
the new m achine creates, other
wise we would now he living in
caves.
Just a few illustrations: The de
velopm ent o f new and im proved
m achines
fo r
digging, grading,
loading and tru ck in g
has made
m any projects possible which oth
erwise would never have been at
tempted. The open pit mines are
one such p roject. Som e o f these
are about three m iles wide und
close to half a mile deep. Bull
dozers und pow er shovels are con
tinually g ou gin g deeper into the
earth and loading the ore into
huge trucks. All such pits would
have been im possible before m od
ern excavators had been invented,
even though these great excava
tors appear to th row m any men
out o f work.

It makes possible full-speed ocean

It gives eyes to m ariners so that
they can pierce,
cam ouflage or
accurately locate other ships or
obstacles. It Judges the altitude
o f a plane flyin g even as high as
twenty thousand feet
to witWn
one hundred feet o f the true dis
tance. Hence, in peacetime, radar
will
be installed in
ships and
planes to enable
navigation
in
fog-bound waters
and to m ake
possible “ all-wenther’ flying. This
will increase em ploym ent In many
ways.
The uirplane in W orld W ar II
was indispensable.
The
design,
m anufacture and continuous oper
ation o f airplanes call fo r large-
scale em ploym ent in an industry
w hich only a few years ago was
non-existent. Already the helicop
ter is recognized as a revolution
ary addition to the plane indus
try.
The post o ffice departm ent
plans to use helicopters to trans
port mail between suburban ar
eas and large city airports so as
to guai antee twelve-hour service
between any tw o cities in the
country.

Date-Nut Delights
4 tablespoons
vitam in ized
m argarine
% cu p sugar
1 egg yolk
114 cups enriched
flour
2 teaspoons hak -
Ing pow der
H teaspoon salt
3 tablespoona
milk
Cream vitaminized margarine ana
sugar. Add egg yolk and beat well.
Sift flour, measure and resift with
baking powder and salt. Add dry
ingredients alternately with milk to
margarine mixture. Chill dough for
an hour or so, as it makes dough
easier to roll. Roll to % Inch thick
ness and cut with a medium sized
cutter with scalloped edge. Place
cookies on lightly greased cooky
sheet, then place in center o f cook
ies a heaping teaspoon of Date-Nut
Filling. Cover with scalloped cook
ies of equal size from which centers
have been removed. Press edges to
gether lightly. Bake in hot oven
(400°F .) 8-10 minutes. Remove from
pans at once onto cake rack.
Date-Nut Filling: Cook until
thick: V4 pound dates, chopped, 14
cup water and 2 tablespoons vita
minized margarine. Add 14 cup
chopped nuts. Yield: 214 dozen
cookies.
