Now we know the part we played
h he t Philippine invasion
The news o f the successful invasion o f the Phil­
ippines stirred the nation. For it was an amazing
achievement landing great numbers o f troops
and enormous quantities o f supplies thousands
o f miles across the Pacific.
Since Southern Pacific is the largest Western
railroad and serves the major porta o f embarka­
tion on the W est Coast, a very large portion o f
the troops and war material destined for the
Philippines moved over our rails.
It was a thrilling triumph for our Army, Navy
and Merchant Marine.
From now on, more and more o f Am erica’s
might will roll W est over the railroads for the
final showdown with Japan. Southern Pacific’s
100,000 railroaders know well how important it
is to keep these war trains rolling. But they need
help. They need the help o f thousands o f men
and women for this job.
W e railroaders got a special thrill from the
new s too, not only because we are Americans but
also because we know now that months ago the
Philippine invasion started on the railroads.
And many a railroader who, in recent months, has
worked double shifts to keep the war freight roll­
ing to Pacific Ports, knows that he, too, had a part
in putting those men ashore on f-eyte Island.
This mighty blow at-Japan placed an especially
large burden on the Western railroads. Serving
a less populated territory, the Western lines nor­
mally do not have th density o f traffic o f the
eastern trunk lines, snd their tracksge was de­
signed accordingly. Yet the western roads, in
spite o f a manpower shortage, have handled
their enormous war burden efficiently and on
schedule. Theirs has been a real achievement too.
