P G E M a k e s Substations
Autom atic!
PGF has always Seen in the forefront in developing and
adopting new equipment and technics. Thus PGE has
vigorously pushed the conversion of substations to auto
matic operation. Now PGE has 60 automatic substations,
located throughout its territory, which do the necessary
switching and other jobs.
An automatic substation can perform many important
jobs. For instance, ifc during a storm, a limb of a tree should
fall into a PGF line, the automatic substations will open
the circuit breaker and instantly close it again; then, if the
limb has fallen clear of the line, the circuit breaker will
stay closed; but if the limb should be still swaying on the
line, the circuit will be automatically opened again, and
this time the automatic device waits a few seconds before
reclosing the switch. If the limb does not fall clear, the
circuit breaker will stay open after the second closure until
the trouble has been cleared by service men.
