It ’s the 135-ton triple expansion steam engines
such as built by Iron Fireman Manufacturing Co.
...and GAS plays a vital
part in their construction!
H ere is th e story: In every Liberty ship built in Portland is
installed a gi ini 2500-horsepower engine. To date, more than 200
ot these powerful engines have been assembled by Iron Fireman
Manufacturing Company.
Although Iron Fireman received its first contract for these
engines only a year and a half ago, this Portion J firm is now one
o f the three largest builders o f Liberty ship engines in the U nited
Stales. Production averages 27 a month at present.
Iron Fireman has found that it pays to get the best assistance
possible, both in men and materials. That’s why gas has
long been used in the Iron Fireman plant — and is today being
depended on for more im|x>rtant work than ever before.
