It constantly pro motes individual dignity, worth and opportunity; guarantees to every citizen freedom of religion, speech, assembly, press and peti tion; safeguards private proper ty ; maintains equal justice be fore the law; provide«: free schools for all, and constantly seeks so cial and economic security and the blessings of liberty for young and old. This is our country. Individuals or groups may have fallen short or failed in their duty, but we, the people, press on to our des tiny. We, the people, love and cherish our Republic. We pledge support for its institutions with our lives and sa cre d honor. CUTTING BAIT The phrase, "social security fo r ev- • ryone” , is the new political bait be ing prepared to lure the voter. It is a fine sounding catch phrase. There is som ething even greater than full-stom ach social security, how ever. There is individual freedom -th e right to d o things fo r oneself. Political social security that makes on«- a virtual ward o f the state in return for a full stom ach and a place to sleep, destroy^ freedom . G overnm ent can only "g iv e ” to the , people what it first takes aw ay from them. It can tax or con fiscate sav ings nnd redistribute them under the guise o f equalization o f wealth. But a nation will starve if a m a jority o f the people do not have the individual am bition and incentive to work and save, and produce new wealth continuously to take care o f them selves and that small percentage o f unfortunate individuals who will ulways hej wards o f the state, and w ho should be cared for much better than they now are. Political planning o f the lives o f all the people in a nation can he carried too far, just as can parental planning the lives o f children we face that danger in our country. The plan ners and spenders are beginning to outnum ber the w orkers and the sav ers. TRAGIC COMEDY If the people o f thi* country really wanted to con trol inflation, they could do so. T he cou ntry la faced with rising prices. W hy? Bead the headlines in the new papers o f a single day. A million and a quarter railway w orkers dem and fu rth er wage Increaties. Hun dreds o f thousands o f coal m iners dem and additional wage increases. One faction o f shipyard w orkers an nounce they) will w ithdraw their "n o strike for the du ration " agreem ent if a National latbor R elation Board decision favors another labor faction. And then, labor leaders call on the icsld en t to reduce the t o s t o f living. They all blam e the farm er who Is short o f m achinery, short o f farm lulsir, unable to pay war wages, but ch arged for everything he buys on a w ar-w age scale. Gan the result be other thnn high e r prices Instead o f lo w e r? The situation would be com ical if It were not tragic. Unless we, as individuals and co l lective groups within the nation, show less greed and m ore love for our country, It Is a t«>tal waste o f tim e to talk atxiut con trollin g Infla tion no power on earth can stop It. until the explosion com es. — — ------- V -------------------- H ave you looked over ths ads this w eek ? C urtail C iv ic Spending No one wants to limit a single activity necessary to win the war, but just ordinary common sense and economy indicate that every unnec essary civic expenditure should wait until the emergency of war has passed. Right now our new Congress is confronted with the problem of pre venting excessive profits on war con tracts. Present law provides for “ renegotiation” of their separate contracts by the Army and Navy de partments and the Maritime com mission. There are some three mil lion of these contracts, but probably not 5 per cent will show excessive profits after taxation. The Internal Revenue department will find every case of excessive profits and, where such profits re main after taxes, can report such cases for “ renegotiation.” This is practical economy and does the job the most etficient way. Industry and agriculture, both of which feel the pinch of shortage of manpower, should support Congress in any method it decides upon as practical and economical. Prevent ing new additions to the payrolls and cutting out useless civic expenditures and payrollers who have nothing to do that is constructive in the war effort will help solve the manpower problem and ease th% burden of taxes. Official of Treasury Is A m ong ‘Outstanding’ Young Men in Nation Ted R. Gamble, Assistant to the Secretary of the Treasury, has been selected by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the nation’ s ten outstanding young men for 1942. Mr. Gamble, who is 36, came to Washington from Oregon, where he had served as State Adminis trator of the War Savings St iiT. During his tenure there. Oregon Bond sales reamed a new peak. Study o f world population figures gives added reasons why A m erica must win this war, said President A. L Strand o f O regon State C ollege, in an address recently to the faculty Triad club. Dr. Strand pointed out that A m erica now has m ore men in the best m ilitary age grou p than it ever had before and probably ever will have again. W e had better win this w ar and do everything we can to see that there will not be another one in 25 years because we probably w ou ldn ’t be able to win another world con flict. President Strand said that A m erica is expected to reach a static popula tion within the next cou ple decades unless the present tiend is changed by increased m igration. There are already tw o million few er children below 10 years o f age than there were 10 years ago. Population trends are im portant to business, to educa tion, and to the con duct o f interna tional affairs, the speaker told this grou p o f facu lty men.
