Babson Says Plan Your Own
O ld-Age Security
Babson Park, Mass., D ec. 4, 1936.—
T his w ill be the n ation ’s m erriest
C hristm as sin ce 1927 and 1928. The
drop from dizzy h eigh ts o f 1929 and
the headaches that follow ed are now
just an unhappy m em ory. Today we
are again out of the w oods w ith the
broad, sm ooth h ighw ay o f prosperity
beckoning us to start an oth er joy-ride.
Then w hat? W ill w e h ave another
collapse and consequent period of su f
fering? Is A m erica's future ju st an
unending series of sta g g erin g peaks
and d ep ressin g valleys? J u st joy-rides
and h ead ach es?
Can D epression Be O utlaw ed?
In m y o ffice I keep before m e a
ch art that sh ow s all of the ups and
dow ns o f b usiness d uring th e past 100
years. Go w a y back to 1836 and there
is no ch an ge in these a ltern a tin g cy
cles. The Law of A ction and R eac
tion operates con tinu ously and alw ays
w ill. The C onstitution m ay be tossed
into the ash-barrel; the A dm inistra
tion m ay go F a scist; D em ocracy m ay
even tem porarily be suspended; but
the law o f cycles w ill rem ain a s fixed
as the sta rs in their orbits. W e can
cut o ff the p eak s and fill in the v al
leys of th ese cy cles only as individu
als. C ollective legislation cannot turn
the trick an y m ore than it can stop
the flo w in g and ebbing o f th e tides.
W ith the right am ount o f purpose
and plan, any person of good health,
in the U nited S ta tes and C anada, can
level out h is own b usin ess cycle.
R igh t now the en tire country is m ak
