One third of the work is completed. The entire road [will be open for traffic November 1. Requisition papers were issued by Governor Olcott for the return to Ore gon of J. J. Walker, ex-cashier of the Lafayette State bank at Lafayette, j?amhill county, on a charge of arson, committed in November, 1920. Walker was said to be under arrest in Minne sota. Many mills in the northwest, whieh closed as a result of congestion of the yards, owing to the inability to ship lumber during the seamen’s strike, are now contemplating resum ing operations, according to Chester J. Hogue, acting secretary of the W est Coast Lumbermen’s association. Among the successful candidates for appointments as second lieutenants in the regular army examined on April 25 are the following from Oregon: W illiam Conrade Jones, Salem; W al lace Ellsworth Niles, Grants Pass; Harold Stevenson, Harry Lynch and William Orville Collins of Corvallis. Loans and discounts of the 287 hanks operating in Oregon show a de-\ crease of more than $32,500,000 since June 30, 1920, according to a report by Prank Bramwell, state superintend ent of banks, based upon statements received from the various institutions •t the close of business, June 30, 1921. The Prescott drainage district, in Columbia county, has filed application with the state irrigation and drain age securities commission for the certification of bonds in thfe sum of $10,000. The money will be used for constructing a dyke, installing pumps and establishing an outlet. The dis trict is near Goble. There were two fatalities due to in dustrial accidents in Oregon during the week ending August 4, according to a report filed by the state indus-? trial accident commission. The vic tims, were Vernon Foster, logger, Gas ton, and H. T. Lowe, logger, Valsetz. A total of 428 accidents were report ed during the week. At a hop growers’ meeting which nearly every dealer of Independence and -vicinity attended it was agreed to pay 50 cents a box for picking and $3 a day for common labor during the season.
