Suppose
Suppose that Oregon passed a law fixing the price of
potatoes at 75 cents per 100 pounds, eggs at 10 cents per
dozen, wheat at 60 cents per bushel, while the market
price in Washington and California were double the state-
fixed price in Oregon, what would Oregon farmers do?
They would, of course, ship their potatoes, eggs and
wheat to the market that paid the higher price.
If the people of Oregon adopt the constitutional
amendment fixing the legal rate of interest at 4 per cent,
what will the owners of money (capital) do?
Like the farmer, they will, of course, lend their money
where it commands the highest market price, where the
interest rate is highest—outside the state of Oregon.
The matter at issue is so simple and so clear, that the
average voter cannot fail to understand the danger of such
an amendment, if the elector gives the question any con
sideration at all.
