THE SUMPTER MINER
?
TACOMA
SMELTER
"
Goes Into Combine With
the Selby and Ever
ett Plants.
The now incubating northwestern
smelter combine is a queer deal. Tne
people iuteres'ed are telling the
reporters that It is "anti-trust," at
the flame time acknowledging that
the plant at Everett, owned by the
American Sueltiug and ReBuinug
company, will be turned in to the
alleged new cumijauy for its stock.
Good guefuera say thut the dominat
ing faction of the truat is merely
buying the Tacoraa and Selby works
with a view to reselling to the
American cumpHuy at a big profit.
The latest regarding the deal h the
following prejs dispatch from Ta
coma, published in the Spokusmnn
Keviow: Negotiations whereby tho
Taooma smelting plant will be trans
ferred to new bauds will nut be com
pleted for about 30 days. According
to William R. Rust, vice president,
geueral manager and treasurer of the
Taooma plant, there is every Indica
tion that the sale will be nousum
tuated in that time and that the
ownership of the local smelting
worke, the Everett smelter aud the
plaut of the Selby Smelting & Lead
cumpauy of Sau Fraucisco will pass
to the new compauy.
The prospective owners are eastern
capitalists who were represented
during tho leceut negotiations in
San Francisco by Horuard M. Unruch
aud 11. 0. UhvIb of New York. How
ever, Mr. Rust and some of the others
who are interested in the local plaut
will retain their holdings. The new
oorporatlou will be "nob-trust, M ex
cept that the Ameriona Smelting &
Refining compauy will have an In
terest. The Everett plant la at
present owued by the latter corpora
tion, which ia familiarly referred tu
as the smelting trust. This company
will turu the works at Everett into
the holdings of the one corporation
and in return will take stock.
Mr. Rust will retain his present
position at the Tacoma smelter. To
night ho stated be will continue to
hold bis interest in the cumpany.
While deQuite plans oauuot be au
uounaed until the sale is completed,
it is certain thut tho loaul plaut will
contiuue to operate as heretofore.
While it was reported several woeks
agu that the purchase price for prop
erty iuvolved was about 94,000,000,
Mr. Rust was uot prepared to either
affirm or deny this touigbt.
One of the latest additions to the
local plaut is an electrolytic copper
refinery, wbioh will be tunning
within a few days. This is the
only one in operation west of Great
Falls., Mont., and is a notable ex
tension of the Tacoma works.
Golconda Stockholders Meeting.
The Pendleton East-Oregonlan is
now publishing a call for a special
meeting of the stockholders of the
Goloonda Consolidated Mining com
pauy, to be held there April 8. The
purpose of tne meeting Is stated to
be tho ratification of a bond isjuo or
other evidence of indebtedness, the
money thus raised to be used iu pay
ing off claims against the company
and opeuing up the property. It' is
thought that the market for the boud
has already been fouud and that this
meetiug will merely legalize th6
issue, and that work on an extensive
scale will 'soon be resumed at the
famous old producer. The Miner
has already published an authentic
story, telliug of the installation of
a hoisting plant.-
