ge?htfm . Wednesday, March 8, 1905 THE SUMPTER MINER 9 MAYFLOWER MINE IS WONDERFULLY RICH There lb imiah exciteuiout in the Cornucopia minium on tup, sixty miles uiHt of Baker City, over tbe new strike made Wednesday iu tbe May flower miue. Snperiuteudent J. A Wilson telephoned iu about tbe strike Hud at ouue sent a large bag of the ore, which arrived here yesterday and astonished all who bud tbe pleasure of seeing it. Tbe Mayflower is cer tainly a wonder aud with tbe other big mines in thtt camp is carrying out the assui'iiuu of well iuformed mining men that this one camp alone is equal to Cripple Creek, Goldflold or Touopab and will soon surprise the world. Eastern Oregon hMH other good things, hut the Cornu copia disu let in now makiuggnod tbe predictions of Liudgren, tbo cele brated United States geologist. This latest strike in the Maytlovvor! was made iu tbo south drift uu tbe 100 foot level. A large body of ore was opouod and it is simply fabu lously rich. The quart, is sylvan ite, oalavorite aud petsito. Tho sum pies sent to tbo city were seen yes terday iu tbe quarters of Manager Hoggs at tho (Joisor Graua hotel, and wbeu asked about tbo mattor bo cooly STOP OFF AT AND COME "Stop off at linker aud como to Sumpter," is to bo tbe war cry of the Sampler brauoh of tbo Oregon Miners' association and of the Sump tor Ore Exhibit association, during the time the Lewis and Clark fair h opeu to custom visitors. Plans aro in process of formulation whereby exceptional inducements will be held out to fair visitors to alight from westbound trains at tbe junction towu, board a Sumpter Valley flyer, and from that time until tbey resume their journey toward tbe coast be the guebts of the people of Sumpter. One member of tbe board of man agers of tbe Sumpter Ore Exhibit association has suggested the follow ing outliue of a plau to cause people to stop at Baker: "What's the matter with getting up a big lot of advertising mutter in the shape of a comprehensive booklet, containing important aud iuterestiug fact relating to tbe minerul re sources of this camp iu tabloid form," said tbe association mauager to a Miner man last uigbt. "We tuignt stutiou a mau at Pocatello, for instance, to pass through all west-bouud traius aud baud out booklets to tourist passengers. Tbe booklet might be made to contain information as to how stop-over privileges may be secured from con ductors, with details as to bow to make connections with the S. V. road at Baker, or we might have a mau at Baker to meet all trains aud take personal obarge of all tourists who desire to make tbe Sumpter trip. When these people reach Sumpter, we might have a stauding reception committee to welcome ibej tourists respended: "Tbe ore speaks for it solf, it's a miue. " Tbe specimens of tbe ore exbibltod whioh were sent in by Mr. Wilson, Bimply sparkle with gold. Tho gold is there in obuuks aud buuobes, aud assays will undoubtedly run up to many tbousauds to tbe ton. The property will be developed on present plana by tbe running of drifts aud tbe making of upraises, blocking out the ore. Before snow comes again, .Manager Hoggs says tbey expect to be milling and shipping ore. Captain Alllene Case and Mr. Hoggs are authority for tbe statement that with transportation, thousands aud tbousauds of tons of ore, now absolutely a dead loss, could be ship ped to the smelter with profit. It costs about 830 por tou for frolgbt tind troatuient charges on ore from that district. When tho Vlnaon railroad is oomplotod tbe charges will bo reduaed to about 818 per tou. All miuing meu iu touch with tho situation bolieve that iu the noar future there will bo such dovelomunt aud oxoltomout iu tho Go.-uuoopin as tho northwest baa novor soon. Dom oorat. BAKER TO SUMPTER aud escort thorn to poiuts of iutorest hereabouts. A rido to tho string ot molhor lodo mines, after a visit tu the permauout ore exhibit would bo a good thiug, aud J would cause com parativoly little expouse. ,, "Not ouo person iu ten ever saw a gold mine, aud eastern visitors to tbo Portlaud fair would undobtedly enjoy tbe experience. Their (.enjoy ment would change from mere curios ity to deep Interest, and if we cau vucaeed in getting a few hundred wealthy easterners jj intereatedin western gold miuing, an inevitable result would be their fluauuial oo opreation iu tbe pleasaut aud profit able work of developing Baker uouuty prospeata iuto dividend pay ing mine as good as tbe North Pole, E. &. E. , Columbia, Imperial and others. "It seeuiH to me that every miuing mau iu this camp, whether promoter or operator, as well as every Sumpter buisuess man, whose iutorests are iudentical with tbe interests of tbe miniug meu, should put forth every effort to get people here duriug fair time." Tbe Citizens League of Baker City has named a commission to collect ores for tbe Baker county ore exhibit at tbe Lewis aud Clark fair. Tbe commission consists of J. II. Alt ken, Huutngon; John Arthur, Cable ville; W. Q. Ay re, Durkee; Seymour H. Bell, Sumpter; W. M. Brown, Rye Valley; Fred fiubb, Express; Capt. Ailene Case, Cornucopia; and many others.
