Wednesday, March i, 190? THE SUMPTER MINER CAVES, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL Oregou, this25th day of ('January, tonr, - i inti-"i ".r " rsirnamPLT- p S2?TOW Executor of theHEatnto of Miohnol Lyucn, Deceased. tjja!Mum wfiLr- art -wr- t IPTSJ. B. FRYER, Some of tbe natural oaverDH of tbo world are enormous, for iuatanae the jMnmmotb cave of Kentucky, tbe lar est known suberraneau chamber in tbe world. This cave exteuds over an era of eight to ten miles in dia meter and has many chambers con nected by avenues and which form a huge underground mine, with tunuels aggregating 150 miles. The Lou ray cave, of Virginia, la uald to cover an era of over 50 milea. Nature in theae enormous under ground cavities worked wondere, but man, in his delving for mineral, Iihb' accomplished far greater wonders, tbe i mining regions ot tbe world Mttestiug 1 1 this fact. Tbo English ooal mines have been worked for ceuturluH and the earth is penetrated by tunnels for hundreds of miles. The lalt mines J of Austria tmve a vmt aggregate i of woiked out tunuels, iiud tbo gold mines uf tbe Rand, South Africu, have already eaten their way through vast aroas of underground workiugs. Tbe copper mines of Miohigau, in their search for ore, have eaten through the earth this way and that aud in their aggregate of tunnels form ouo of the world's greatest and most Interesting ougiueoriug feats of man. In tbu development aud oper ation of iron miues of Miohigau and Minnesota tbo earth is houey-uomned with tunnels and some of the mines would, in thoir tuunel mileage, be far larger thau many of tbo world's greatest caves. But all these lu stauoos of underground workiugs are comparatively iuslguifioaut when compared to tbo operations in tbo coal miuos of Peuusylauia. Ju this state for upwards cf a huudred years coal ban been mined, both autbraoite aud bituminous. Statistics buow that tbore has been extracted from b3ueath Pennsylvania's surface, 1,000,000,000 tous of bituminous coal and 1,500,000,000 tous of au thiacite ooal. This by no menus expresses tbe amount of material mined, for every mine has its immense culm banks. What a sight then to behold the underground oavities of this state. In the autnraaite regions tbe work ings underground, if plaoed end to end, would exteud away for a distance of from New York to Denver, and if tbe bituminous workings be added, San Franaisoo would be reached. These vast subterranean caves, the work of man in his hunt for min erals, is truly siguitioant of his immense energy, aud though seem ingly of va6t proportion now, what will be tbe result attuiued with a huudred or a thousand years more of work.
