LEE S. OVITTS FAITH
IN SUMPTER DISTRICT
Lee S. Ovitt, a nationally famous
piotnoter of western mining enter
prises, whose name is as familiar to
the advertisement-reading public as
that of Douglas, the shoe man, ar
rived in Sumpter this moruiug from
California, acompanicd by W. S.
Meyers, a fellow citizen of Cbiago.
Messrs. Ovitt aud Meyrs were met at
tbe dopot by L. R. Bellman. o

covered over with fur robos, and
driven up tbe gulch to tbe Cracker
Oregon mine, at Bourne, lu which
Mr. Meyers is a stockholder, and for
whioh Mr. Ovitc H fiscal agent. Tbe
party returned this afternoon,
and tbe visitors departed for tbe east.
Barring tbe Killen, Warner, Stew
art company, and possibly H. G.
Wheeler & Co., of New York, no
other fiscal agency iu the world has
brought more money iuto tbe

KOSSEAU'S QUEER IDEAS
Of MINES AND MINERS
Among tbe writiugs of Jeuu Jao
ques RoBseau tbe following, hitherto
uupiibliabud, remarks have beanfound.
The Engineering and Miuiug Journal
translates them as they are quoted in
L'Eoho des Mines et de la Metal
lurgie: "The mineral kingdom baa
uotbiug about it that is lovable or
attractive; its riches, enclosed with
iu tbe heart of tbe earth, appears to
have beeu put away from the sight of
mau in order not to tempt his
cupidity; they are placed there as
though held in reserve against tbe ex
haustion of that true wealth which
is at his very door and wbisb be
comes distasteful to him as he be
oumes corrupted.
"Then he needs must call oni ndus

It Ib understood that the credi

ceiver, but he being one of thorn,
he declined to aot and Mr. Vert,
representing tbo Poo diet on bank, was
named by tbe court.
Mr. Vert arrived here Saturday
aud was driven to tbe mine yesterday
by Mi. Howard, who turned it aud
all tbe porsoual property over to him.
It is thought tbe affairs of the
company are about to be straighten
ed out; but what tbe next move
will be can ouly bo vaguely sur
miBod. fully financed tbe California, Cracker
Oregon aud Craokerjack mines, aud
sold 145,000, worth of stock in tbe
Golconda mines. The mere fact of
Mr.Ovitt'soonueotiuu with a western
mining propositou Ih sufficient
guarantee of its legitimacy. He by
no aeans confines bis ministrations
to the Sumpter district, but has
irons iu tbe tiro iu various parts of
tbe west from Nome to Mexico.
However, as ho wroto not long ago
to Tbe Miner, "I have uuboundod
coufldonue in tbe Sumpter district,
aud have exploited it in a way whioh
amply verifies thU belief."
Mr. Ovitt maintain- offices iu Mil
waukoe, Bostou, New York, Pittsburg
and St. Louis. His main office is
in Milwaukee.
Mr. Ovitt stated to a Miner man
that ho will return to Sumpter in
about six weeks, when there will
be something doing iu connection
with bis eastern Oregou properties.
