Wednesday, January 18, 1905 THE SUMPTER MINER PROFITS UNDER LEASING SYSTEM The study of the milling statistics for tbe year just oloBed bring to uotioe tbe irnportaut inurement of not profit derived by the tributers under tbe ever growing leasing system. Tbe uew faotor is one wbloh has not nithorto attracted attention from tbe average jtudeut of dividend figures, but it is now so prumlont that it. demands far, more, (bau a mere superficial. flstimatfl in ,the oompila tiou of net. results, iulmes past it . has been .deemed sufficient to deter miue tbe iotal gross output, and deduct therefrom tbe total exneuee in equipment, labor, etc., as it ac crues to; tbe direct owner of the prop erties, the result, presenting the amount available for dividends after fixed charges and ronowals have been met. Tbe net profits from a mining eutorprise are then computed strictly from the poiut of viow uf the direct owner, or tbe stockholder, where the owuer is a corporation. Tbe introduction of the leaser re quires that uot only shall bis tribute be counted, but bis own individual profit as well, iu a camp where the leaning system is predominant, as in (joldfleld or Cripple Creek, it be comes spocially. important to take this faotor into consideration iu the computation of tbe average percent age of profit, it addB much to the statistician's labor, indeed, but it furnishes all the more reason why the statisticau should know bis busi ness. When tbe profit is divided betweeu the owuer aud the leaser, it is right that tbe tamo aocurauy bo given to each iuoremeut of net gain. Aud this brings us to the really interestuig phase of tbe mattor namely, not so much the money prof it dorived from the industry as tbe general social good incident to its operations. Tbe average leaser is his own laborer. Wbero few men are required, be is himself a plaiu miner, aud where a renter number ia employed be may be a shift bos, a superintendent or even a manager. The formal wages which he alluws to himself would, under direct compauy managemeut, be charged up to labor or salary expense aud be deducted from tbe gross returns. If uuder .direot' company management there were no gross output, these Items would bB regarded as losses, for tbe time at least, and perhaps uliti mately, for tbe owner doss uot, as a rule, flatter hlrmolf at being ablo to pay unproductive wages to a large force of men. Tbe leaser, on the otbor baud, is sometimes satisfied it be makes no more than wages and he is not always dissatisfied with bis bargaiu if he occasionally misses his wages, for be is an in lepeudout operator with a cbanoe of big fortune held out to bim. Moreover, it is tbe experience of u great, mauy oamps and individual enterprises that tbe leaser will make more tbau wages where tbe direot company manage raeut will run behind. It follows, tbtrefore, that under tbe leasing system tbe labor item ia not so much of a bug bear to the small tribute r aa it ia to the owner under direot management, even uuder similar degrees of success or failure. Tbe leaser, beiug a nearer approach to tbe laborer, possesses a dearer appreciation of tbe person ality of labor, in reckoning tbe price of mineral production, the wagus of miuers may be counted as an expense to the individual-operator, but taking tbe entire mineral in dustry together, it is only fair from the above point of viow to consider that tbe opportunities it furnishes the wage worker are a distant contri bution to tbe social good. They couititute iu themselves an uudeui able material divldeud to society as a whole. Daily Miuiug Record. Two Important Mlninq Deals. Two good miuiug deals liuvo been made for eastern Orogon prop erties reoeutly. One of the trans actions has beeu tbe bonding of tbe Ureat Atuerioau group by Spokane capitalists, aud the other the tiuauu log of tbe. Little Cracker property'! adjoining tbe Great American. R. D. Harper, who ia in the city from that section, says that the two deals will mean much for tbe camp aud that the starting of development work on both properties will have a great deal to do with determining the worth of tbe camp. The Ureat American ia a promising property aud has a great showing. On the Little Cracker, ten feet of high grado oro has beou opened up aud a drift has beeu ruu for GO feet on tbo ore body. Tbo croBsout tunnol is uow in over 200 feet. Another 100 foot will tap the ledge, aud thou tbo men will bo- gin dritfiug both wayi on tbo lodgo. Tbo prospects are good for the open ing up of a big ml no.
