PWBPP?rTT" i iij I JPflWWWW Wednesday, October 26, 1904 THh bUMPTER MINhR S FIRE IN ELKHORN SHAFT Fire broke out Wednesday in the shaft of the Baisloy-Elkhorn mine, eight miles uortbenat of Sumpter, burning for twenty-four hours mid causing serious iujury to the under ground workings. A mouutniu stream was dually diverted into the workings and the flames drowned. The lower levels were flooded aud the maiu pump station submerged. It will require several days for the shaft to be unwatered. y Only meagre details of tho oo- ROAD TO LA BELLEVUE WOULD MAKE NEW MINES A peudiug deal for tho sale of La Bellevue mine to Sumpter men is causing much discussion as to the best route for a road from Sumpter thereto. One of the goullemen iu tereatod in the ponding purchase cruised a road via the Ibox, Uncle Sam aud Valley Qneou not lung ago, aud announced that a feasible grado could be dhaoverod through an ex tension of tho Inex road for a dls taco of seven miles, making the total length between Sumpter and La Bellevue about sixteen miles. The only bad part of such a road would be tbat stretch between the Uoole Sam down to Goddess mouutaiu, the difference in elevation between the two points being approximately 1,000 feet, within a distance of half a mile. Tho only properties possible of beuollt by this road would be the Uncle Sam. Monumoutal, Buffalo, Valley Queeu aud La Bellevue. On the other hand, tho mine oporators of Cable Cove aro Glamor ous for recognition uf the routo out lined by M. E. Baiu, of the Ovor land, In last Wednesday's Miner. This road would be an extension of the present Overland road on to the Constellation, over the Lake Cnek divide, down Big Limber oreok and Bull creek to the North Fork of the John Day. This road would open up a suore or more of properties, of which the following are the most impertant: Hamilton group, Owl aud Elephant, Arizona-Nevada, Grand Central, Constelatlon, Lucky OFFICIAL RECORDS. A briof message was received iu Baker City yestorday from the miuo, anuouuuiug that a fire iu the shaft hud occurred, but tbat tin damago was slight. The report became current that Mauagor Edwiu Field and Superintendent Dick Eaokmau both had narrow escapes from suffocation while endeavoring to subdue tho flames. It is reliably learned today . that thin featuro was added by an imaginative Baker City renorter. Buy, Cold Hill, Goldou Rule, Gypsy Kiug, Gypsy Queou, Storm King, Forest, Advauco, McKiuley aud Koosovolt, Minie McDowell, tho Holly properties aud La Bellevue. There Is already a fairly goo.1 wagou road from Crauo Flat to the North Fork tu tho mouth of Lake crook. A few hundred dollars could placo this old road iu good ro pair and afford direct connection, uot only with Crauo Flat, but with tho North Fork placers. Tho dis tance from Sumpter by this road would be as follews: To Cabloville, eleven miles; to tbo Overland twolvo miles; to the North Fork, sixtoou miles; to Craue Flat tweuty miles. The present distance from Sumpter to Crane Flat, via Granite, is approx imately thirty miles. Tho Overland road would bring La Bellevue within sovonteon miles of Sumpter. Approach would bo from tho Lake Creek side. It isoutimatud that 8:1,000 will extoud tho road from tho Ovorlaud to tho Fork. Efforts will bo mado, iu the eveut of h consummation of tho Bellevue deal, to secure cash sub scriptions from owuers of milling properties to be benefited auu build the road next spring. With an oasy outlet many of tbo proportion named would ship ore to the Sumpter smelter. This would meau tbo employment of more miners, more teamsters aud the purchase from Sumpter merchants of more pro visions, all of which stauds for pros parity. to Fred H. M.
