Wednesday, August 17, 1904 Tflh SUMPTER MINER WILL BLOW IN SMELTER SOME DAY THIS MONTH Manager Fuller Authorizes the Statement That Ore Supply Has Been Contracted For. The Oregon Smelting and RefiuiuR company's plant here, popularly known aa tho Sumpter smelter, will bo blown in some time during the present month, the exact dato of which has not been fixed. When it does start, it will run continuously for an indefinite period. The oro supply has been contracted for; tho transportation facilities arranged for. Tho Minor makos this statement on the authority of (Jouoral Mauagor Fuller. That goutlemau granted a ropre sontativo of this paper an iutorviow today. His views on tho local situation aro both intorosting and valuable. Without attempting to quote him verbatim, tho subatanco of his romarks aro horo with given. He has boon ovor tho sovoral dis tricts of tho eastorn Orogou gold fields twice; tho first timo hastily; tho seooud timo very carefully, in com pany with Superintendent Kiroben, the latter also a miniug man of wide experience aud undoubted ability. They examined every mino and pros poo t of any importance, went through tho workings aud inspooted dumps. Mr. Fuller says that this rogiou has a great aud promisiug futuro, but the gold production in futuro must come from a different source than in the past. Heortofore the free milling ores have furnished vory much the largor part of the output. Miuos that have been operated to any consider able extent have gone below the water level, or zone of nxidatiou, the ores have become baso and in somo instances the values are not boing saved. In a few oases, both miues and mills are now idle. It is from these large bodies of refractory ores that far the greater portion of eastern Oregon's gold supply will come in futuro. mm 1 1&K53 To assist the mine owners in solving tho problem of troatiug these heavy sulphide ores, tho ameltor raanagomont is now putting in a testing plant, which will bo in operation at an early date. Already ores from a number of proportios have boon received this purposo, aud will bo touted as fast as possiblo, without cost to tho owners. Ah a gouoral proposition, tho metallurgist in charge of this work bol loves that ooareo crushing, concentration aud smoking will bo tho method nocossary ; but of courso thoro will bo individual oxcoptionB to thin rule. So far as tho oro supply 1h con corned, spoakiug locally, Mr. Fuller say9 that ho has boou vory much gratified to loarn from personal in spection that it is vory much largor than be had hoped for to begiu with, that it will increase rapidly aud that he is oontidout that the capacity of tho smolter will havo to bo onglarged at no distaut day. This will bo dune just as soon as tho domand justifies the enlargement. "Aud I wish you would say in conclusion," romarked Mr. Fuller, that I havo boon courteously and cordially received by the (mine Owners of eastorn Oregon. Thoy havo a&sured mo of their hearty joo-opera-tiou and I feel confldout that we are going to work together for our mutual benefit and the advantage of all this section of country. Thoy( have displayed the characteristic popularly attributed to Missourians; but when I have shown them that we meau business, there has been tin further obstacles in the way of roaobing an understanding."
