f ;4w($vv. -'V.K Wednesday, August 17, 1904 THE SUMPTER MINER r r n 1 BLACK BUTTE MERCURY MINES "Quicksilver nan be manufactured lie re io Oregon. Hi a less cost per unit of tonnage than it can bo pro duced in any other known quick silver region in the world. "'This terse statement from W. 13. Dennis, manager of the Black Butte Quick silver company, ( who has been diligently investigating qnudltious in mines of this character for sevoral years past, and particularly outor getio in making scientific research to determine the exact values of the mine situated eighteen miles front Cottage Grove, in Lauo cnu'nty, conveys a faint notion of prospective importance of this industry to tho state of Oregon. The Black Butto quicksilver dis trict is situated on tho northern slopo of the Calapooia mouutaius, near tho hoad of tho Coast fork of tho Willamette river. Blalok Butte mountain, the highest peak iu the district, riscB to an altitudo of 2.750 feet above tho sou level. Of an area two by eight miles covoriug tho district, about 2,000 acres nro owned by tho Black Butto Quick silvor company, a Washington cor poration, iuoludiug tho apex nf tho peak mentiouod, having acquired the holdings about six years ago. Without reforouco to tho churactor of the ore, other than chat it was cinnabar-bearing, a ilutner Scott lino oro continuous furuaco was oreoted, with capacity for fifty tons per day, and other surface improvements wero made. Subsequently auothor man agement stioceeded that has been diligently at work in an effort to place the whole process of operation at the mine on a tborougly soioutiflo basis. More thau 14,000 feet of work has boeu accomplished iu adits, raisos, winzes aud shafts. When the present management assumed charge only about eighty feet nf de velopment was done. Improvements and tho mill repre sent au investment of 840,000, and a total of 812,000 is represented by the proporty as it stnudB, moro than niuoty per oout of whioh is hold privately. Work is uuw uuder way completing plans for construction of a uow furnace that will be unlike any other ever built for treatment of cinuabar ores. Whilo thoroughly eatisflod as to the principles in volved, aud it is iutouded ultimately to erect a plant of .'$00 tons capacity per diem, au experimental furnace will bo first er'.'otod as a matter of caution. Sumo of the higbost grade quick silver ore fouud anywhere mota cinuabarite occurs here, but in this property is fouud such a vast quantity of material iu which the sulphides of mercury have found lodgment, that it is as a whole a low grade propostiou. Tho ultimate purposo of the mauagomeut is to haudlo immense tonnage, aud with the uecessary plant for doing so, it will be ouo of the great mines of the world, producing fortuues in the liquid mineral so essential iu chemistry and soiouees, production of which has steadily decreased iu the world's produotiou for several years past, with a single exceptiou. Oregon Miuing Journal. Deepest Gold Mines. There are no gold mines in the United States with shafts exceeding nor near approaching some bf tho Australian gold mines iu depth. Tho Kennedy mine in California is the deepest gold mine in the United States and it has not yet obtained a depth of 3,000 feet. Tho gold mines of the New Chum railway in Victoria, Australia, has reached a depth of 3,800 foet aud this mi no has for a year or two boon cousidored tho deepest, gold mine in the earth. Tho Victoria quartz miuo at Boudigo, Victoria, has reached a depth of 3,700 feot on its main shaft aud from tho level at this point a wiu.o has boeu sunk to a depth of 250 feet, thus giving this miuo a greater depth than tho New Chum. Alining World. tRECTING HOIST AT BLACK BUTTE Manager O. C. Wright had a report from tho Black Butto yesterday, stat ing that tho foundation for the now hoisting plant is now being laid, and tho work of construction is to pro ceed as rapidly as possible, in tho meantime, sinking with a windlass will be continued while tho machin ery is being set. The new shaft is now down four sets of timbers, or twenty feot. At tho Bluo Bird, Mr. Wright says, the oro is rapidly increasing in value, aud construction work on the sawmill is proceeing satisfactorily.
