The present showing is regarded as exceptionally good and Mm company feels justilled in making more extensive improvements. PHIL SHtRRIDEN IS SHOWING UP WELL Colonel 10. S. Topping returned yesterday afternoon trom the Phil Shorridon group in the ( I run i to dis trict, which he lecently bonded fiom Captain C. S. Miller. Colonel Topping has boon doing some general prospect work mid is greatly pleased with the showing. While giouni sluicing along the creek bed in tailings from formei operations, ho exposed the veiu 700 feot away from the old shaft. It measures three feet and carries good values. Colonel Topping also prospected a parallel ledgo some distance from the old lodge, and to which little atten tion has been paid In the past. There still remains from 98,000 to 810,000 worth of ore in the shaft and old drifts, and it in the intention of Colonel Topping to thoroughly open up the property. SUMPTER VALLEY WILL BUILD TO JOHN DAY Hon. Ci. W. Mcllaloy, of Prairio City, was on Mm train thin afternoon on route to linker on business. Mr. Mcllaloy says that a citizens mooting was hold yesterday at Prairie City at Mm instance of .Joseph liarton, general freight and passenger agent of Mm Sumpter Valley, to fool Mm pulse of the people in regard to the proposed extension of the road into the John Day country. The meeting, Mr. Mcllaloy says, was harmonious, and the gouoral sentiment of it was to olfer any pos sible encouragement to the railroad people to build the proposed brunch just iih soon as possible. Mr. Unrton, he says, asked no bonus, but only the good will and moral support of the citi'oiiH of tirant county, and assured them that Mm extension will oor taiuly ho built. Just when work will bo started is a little indefinite, as was brought out in an Interview with Mr. Kccles by The Minor yester day. Hut it is certainly the pur pose of the company to build, if not this year, early next. 60UGHT INTO WHITNEY FORWARDING COMPANY Frank P. .Johnson, a woll known linker City business man, associated with the prominent tlrm of .Johnson Brothers, has purchased the stock of T. II. Hoyntou In the Whitney For wardug company, and will assume active management of the concern. Mr. Johsunn was on the train this afternoon returning to linker. Ho will probably spend most of his time in Whitney looking after the company's interests. The Whitney Forwarding company and the M. & S., of linker City, aro associated institu tions. Vinson, father of the water company, nt a banquet given last night at Hotel Sumpter. As told in yesterday's issue, Mr. Vinson was forcibly detained on his return from the Greenhorns to Baker City. When he learned what t he boys bad in store for him be capi tulated without resistance and agreed to stay over. SHIPPING ORE TO THE SMELTER lov. W. J. Hughes, managing owner of the Equity, was on the train this morning going out to the property. A consignment of ore from tho Kquity was recently shipped to tho smolter, and Mr. Hughes says he is preparing to send in more. liev. Hughes is also president of tho Oregon Freo Cold company, operating neat Durkee. He says a trial shipment to tho Sumpter smotlor is also being prepared at this property. NEW TELEPHONE LINE TO BE BUILT TO TIPTON Tho Paoitlo States Telephone com pany is unking arraugoment-t to ox tend its lines from Whitney to tho new town of Tipton, a dlstanoo of eight miles.
