About The Sumpter miner. (Sumpter, Or.) 1899-1905 | View Entire Issue (July 13, 1904)
Wednesday, July u, igoa THF SUMPTFR MINFR ? AN EVEN DOZEN NEW SMELTERS Have Been and Will be Blown in This Year in the West. At least twolvo copper smelting enterprises iu tho West will have beeu added to tho list of producers iu the United States beforo the pros cut year expires. Some of these plants are already iu operation, while others will uot be completed or bo in positiou to produce copper uutil well toward tho end of the year. Though most of tho plauta have boon constructed largely with h view of treating copper ores, yet the neces sary facilities have bceu provided iu them of treating gold and silver bearing reck as a by-product. Nouo of theso furnaces has boon perma nently iu operatiou beforo tho proseut year, so that tho figures givou do uot cover properties, previously closed, which may or may not blow iu during tho year. Of tho reduc tion plants mentioned all are roady to bo used, though only six are at present in commission. Enumerated by states they aro as folews: Ari zona, 2; Colorado, 1; Idaho, 2; Michigan 1; Moutauu, 2; Oregon, 1; Utah, 1; Washington, 1; total, 11. iu Arizona tho uow Copper Queou company's furnaces at Douglas will bo iu a position by July 1 to treat 2,fi00 tnus of copper ore a day. Whilo this plant is uow, its product will uot iu its ontiroty bo calculated as now production, for tho Copper Queen company's old smoltor at His bee is to bo shut down. At Jerome the new smelter of tho Equator prop erty was sullloiontly advanced iu construction in '.)Q'. to bo consid ered as an improvement of that year, hence its existence is not taken into consideration in this estimate. The Troy-Manhattan furnace, while of small calibre, will produco about one ton of copper a day. No place is given in this list to tho Shannon, Old nonunion, Calumet &. Arizona and Val Verde plants, as thoy wore com pleted in 100IJ or boforo that date. The Old Dominion smoltor at Cilobe, whilo it is boiug oxtensively en larged, is, nevertheless, an old plant. Operations in Colorado are prom ised at tho Ouray smelter and Sau Juan plant at Silvertou, but their output is small and they havo beeu iu operation before. Tho Ohio fc Colorado company at Leadvillo is operating a new plant that will give a good account of itself. The plautr however, ia uot adapted to copper ores. It was built to troat tho silver-lead-Iron ores of that camp. Thero is a belief that the American Smelting t Refilling company will construct a smelter at Moulder, Colorado. This statement has not been otllcially verified, however. Iu Idaho the White Knob smolter at Mackay and the small plant put up at Mineral City by tho Ladds Metal company are both uow prop erties which made their first run duriug the year. Prior to 1904 tho Mackay smelter, while ereoted, had beeu operated only in a desultory fashion. In Michigan the Michigan Smelt ing company, which will smelt ore of tbejbaltio, Champion, Tri-Mouutaiu, Atlantic and Wolverine companies, is tho only new addition to the smeltng resources of that state. iu Montana tho Pittsburg & Montana company has its furnaces near 13utte ready to blow in, but bu fore begiuuing its steady run the mine is to be developed down to the l,2f0-foot level. Tho other now plant, near Uasiu, owned by the Cataract compauy, is not working now, though promises aro held out that It will soon be running. A trial is tho exteut of operations at tho mine thus far. The Sumpter smelter in Oregon hilo bceu ready moro than a year, and is ooon to begin operatious. It is belioved tho plant will haudlo con centrates from the nearby mines. Iu Utali tho year has already wit nessed the Utah Copper company's work, uear iJingham, and whilo this compauy has its concentrates treated at a custom plant, its output will havo an important iufluouco upon Utah's copper production. Tho Now houso mines at Nowhouso will bo pi educing beforo tho end of the year. Tho Utah Consolidated company's Highland Uoy smelter at Hingham, Utah, has outered upon a new career with twenty McDougall roasters and niuo rovorboratory furnaces in opera tion. As compared with the old equipment, this is an increase of two rovorberatories and twovlo McDouglas roasters. The enlargements will allow of the handling of nossibly moro than 800 tons of ore a day in tho uoar future, as against from 525 to 550 tons previous to making tho additions stated. What will happen to the Majestic smelter at Milford, Utah, cannot bo forotold, though it is not probable that it will bo working iu 1001. Considerable mine development must bo accomplished before the smelter will bo iu a position to treat the oro produaod. Nearly all of the othor smeltors at. fiinglium have in creased their smelting facilities dur ing the year. In Washington, tho Everett smelter, Everett, recently purchased by the American Smelting & Rollniug compauy, is to lie operated during the year. In Wyoming, though the (irnnd Encampment smeller at Encampment has been ready for two years, con tinuous production has never been witnessed beforo this year. New York Commercial. Malheur County Irrigation. Mr. Will R. King, the well known lawyer and editor of Ouatrlo, who wis in the city yesterday is quite enthusiastic over the dovolpnmout of the agricultural resources of Malheur county. He says there is uot a richer or better county in the entire state, and Mr. King ought to know. Speaking of the government irriga tion works iu progress there, Mr. King said that the government en gineers aro at work iu a systematic manner and are testing tho bod rook with diamond drills iu order to be fully and thoroughly posted iu re gard to the sub soils as a guide o the most scientific surface work in the erection of reservoirs and ditches. Mr. King added that iu a lew days there would be a general meeting of tho people at which there is little doubt that the contractu with the government will bo fully ratified. Democrat. Richards, attorney for Receiver Thompson of the Red Uoy, returned this morning from Maker City, where lie was in conference with officials of this corporation. Mr. Richards gives it as his opinion that Hod Uoy matters will reach a final battlement satisfactory to all con cerned within a day or so, which will mean, of com so, the liquidation of outstanding obligations and the re sumption of work at tho property. The balance of tho purchase price is up, and it is only a qustiou of the presentation of some minor ac counts, and the reaching of some agreements, the details of which have not yet beeu fully determined, that the final adjustment is dependent upon. The first payment of 4,000 was made at the time of tho sale, the confirmation of which now awaits upon the tender of the remainder of tho purchase price, 80,000. This, as stated, is ready, and the sale will bo confirmed as soon as the stock holders agree among themselves as to tho minor details mentioned. BIG MINING DE4L SAID TO BE ON HANDS T. W. Davidson anil A. H. Ilrnwno left this afternoon for Huntington. Mr. Davidson will probably return tomorrow, but Mr. Urowuo will re main several days investigating some Snake river mining proposition, re garding which the firm has a deal pending. The exact nature of it is uot known, and tho principals are uot giving out any very dclluitn infer matiou, but it is incidentally learned that there is a big mining transaction on hand which is likely to be con summated within the next, ten days, lust what the untrue of it is is not stated.
