Wednesday, Janiury6. 1904 THE SUMPTER MINhR WILL FURNISH WATER FOR FLUSHING. Superintendent .1. W. Hull, of tlio Sntnper Wntcr Riiri Electric conipiiny, wrote to K. E. Striihorn, tbo rmuer, December 2.1, atntlujj that the sewer question una being discussed bore and tbut tbo opponents to the Im provement base their opposition to tbo enterprise on the ground that tbero is at times not sufilciuut water to flush the sowers. He naked Mr. Struborn to state plainly bis position on tbls important objection, that tbo town might act intelligently in tbn matter. Several clays since Superin tendent llall recoived a reply, in -which Mr. Straboru states positively that a sufficient supply of water will bo furnished and that he will mako no charge to the city for water for (lushing purposes. This letter is now in tbo imuds of n member of t ho -city council. Ills plan is this: Ho has 4,500 inches of water from Powder river, already harnessed, to bo utilized for power. At the pies out time ouly about one-third of this is requlrod, leaving fully 11,000 inches which ho is going to pipo through tbo business streets for lire protection. This cau bo used for (lushing tbo sewers In tbo business section and will be far more than is necessary. Just as soon as the weather will penult tbo work of laying these mains will bo commenced and the following territory will be cevered: From tbo power houso east on North stroot to Mill, south ou Mill to Sumpter, west on Sumptcr to Center, north ou Center to North, connecting tboro and completing tho circuit. Tbo lottci states that an iucreased -supply of wator for domestic pur poses will be furnished this summer, sufficient to flush tho sewors in tho Tesidenco districts. Where tbls ml--dltoual supply is coming from, tbo letter does not state, and Mr. llall says he is not informed, though ho knows that plaus Imvo been perfected to mako good on that promiso also. Chief Engineer Smith will return to Sumpter and hurry to complotiou nil contemplated improvements, as soon as tbo snow disappears iu tho spring and tbo grouud ran bo worked to advantage. NEW MILL MAN AT THE CALIFORNIA Manager Uellman came back from tho' California last night whero he went to install bis new mill mail, 11. T. Braugb, formerly of Rosslaud. BRIGHT BUSINESS OUTLOOK ASSURED A thorough canvass among the leading propresentatives of manufac turing, mercantile aud wholesale job bing establishments by tho New York Commercial, the result of which can vass was published iu its issue of the 2oth lustaut, with a view of ascer taining prevailing busiuess condi tions and tho outlook for 11104, jus titles the announcement that the closing months of thh year mark a dlstiuct revival iu nearly all branches, and servo as a hoioscopo for continued wholesome trade. Frank expressions were solicited, aud they were forthcoming. Al though 11)04 Is n presidential elec tion year, no apprehension is shown as to the outcome. Iu some In stances Presldout Koosovclt is se verely criticised for tho Panama om broglio, wbilo other busness men strongly approve of the canitl policy as advancing the cause of canal con struction. The greatest anxiety, however, is directed toward tho labor market aud tho exigencies resulting a...... 7aa.i.t, .iivn wi. t a ...... ..ft. --c. i v enforcement of labor unionism. A remarkable featuie developed by interviewing over two score of leading business men Is tho unanimous de maud fur u high protective tarllf, as opposed to reciprocity or tinkering with tho Diugloy law. A number of those busiuess men. Democrats by conviction, appear to have beeu over whelmed by tho persuasive evidences favoring high protection, aud aro high proteciouists at heart, although still advocating freo trade for con sistency sake. Tho criticisms of Roosevelt's administration, while in some instances bused upon tbo effect upon murket couditous, are more of a personal ni.turo aud aro so diversi fied tbut it is but just to state that J.oosovelt Is the candidate of tho level-headed busiuess men. Tbo adoption of a high protectivo tarllf by Germany and the agitation iu Euglaud by tbo Chamberlain fac tion serves to make more clear tbo demand for high protectivo tariff in this country. Every business man interviewed was requested to speak upon the con dition and prospects of his particular branch of business, and likewise tbo dominant attltudo toward tho Hooso volt administration. Then follows sovou columns of cheerful interviews. A DIRECT LINE To Chicago aud all points east; Louisville Memphis, New Orleans, aud all points south.
