THE SUMPTER MINER
1 1
LUGIAN CUT-OFF SAVES
FORTY MILES. 2 HOURS
Of the many railroad projects do
vised iu receut years to save expense
aud ruuulug time, that of tho Luclnu
uto(T iu Utah on tho old Ceutral
Pacific lino, la ono of the most re
markablo as an engineering feat. Tho
now piece of road was formally de
clared completed yesterday, iu tho
proaouco of a largo number of Ameri
can railway officials, and wbon used
by overland traius, as it will bo in
tho near furture, a saving of two
hours, iu time and forty miles Iu
distance will have beeu effected.
Tho oldCoutral Pacific line, which
is now a part of the Southern Pacific
systom, runs from Osdou to Luoluu
by a long dotour around tho northern
half of great Salt Lake. To avoid
this roundabout journey, engineers
conceived this scbemo several
years ago of building diruotly west
from Ogdon and aoioss tho great in
land sea. Tho project was at first
regarded as absurd, but gradually
tho officials were convinced of its
fcsaibility mid a year ago last August
actual work on tho improvement was
conimouced.
Of tho now lino, about thirty miles
consists ot whfit is practically u
bridge across tho lake. It has beou
constructed of piles and earth,' aud
in many respects is a featuro in
modern
railroad building. When
opou for
business fast traius will bo
ablo to
fly across tlfty milos of
swamp and wator and titty miles of
lesort without encountering a single
curve of moment.
Thirty years ago It did not matter
niuob, apparently, whero a trans
continental lino was located, pro
vided a way was found to tho coast.
Nowadays tho matter of time and
distanco is given moro attontiou
iu tho west than over before, and
tho improvements for securing
quicker and bottor servico undor
takou in this part of tbo country lmvo
probably beou greater than iu auy
othor. Spokesman fioviow.
