THE SUMPTER MINhR
VEIN AT VALLEY
QUEEN STRONGER.
Shows a Width of Over
Five Feet And The
Best Values Yet
Found.
Tom C. Clray, superintendent of
the Valley Queen, came lu Thursday
to attend tho meeting of the Eagles,
tj bo held tonight. According to
Mr. Uray's statements, the Valloy
Queen is making the beat showing in
its history. The drift in vein No. 4
baa proceeded a distanco of over
eoronty-flro feet and tho ledge has
strongthoned to fire and a half feet,
with no banging wall in sight. Tho
drift is following tho -foot wall, but
tho eutiro width is not known. Tho
drift not only shows a greater
strength, but the values aro rapidly
Increasing.
Superintendent Uray brought in
with him a line of samples which,
from appearances, indicate amougtho
best vh1uo8 yet oncouutcred at tho
property. Those samples aro In the
hands of MoEwou, Arthur & JlcEwou,
but no assays hare yet beeu made.
This Arm states that, judging from
appearances, that the ore will go con
siderably over 850 to the ton. In
addition to the gold values, there are
strong indications of copper pyrites.
RICH PLACER GROUND
NEAR EAST EAGLE.
T. A. Brown, formerly with the
Sumpter Hotol, is back from East
Eagle, wboro in conjunction with
Jack Hazlewood and C. VV. Halford,
of East Eagle, he owns fine placer
claims known as the Brown Bear
roup. Mr. Brown was there doin
the assessment work, and the ground,
ho states is proving phenomenally
riob. From less than four cubic
yards of dirt be took 95 in coarso
zold and ha& stuff to show for it.
Ho will return Monday and open up
the property more extensively, with a
vlow to winter operations. Fivo
placor claims adjoining this property
wore sold last summer for 910,000,
and the first payment of 95,000 was
'made before Mr. Brown left.
Tbore is some very rich quartz
property, Mr. Brown says, in this
vicinity. One nearby which is op
orating a threo stamp mill, designed
by Meuno Unzlckor, of Baker City,
is revealing eomo very rich ore.
Tendency of Diamond Drill to Drift.
A diamond drill hole seldom
maintains absolutely tho direction iu
which it is started. If startod
horizontally it soon takes a slightly
upward inclination, and as distauce
from the machine increases 'ho bit
rides higher and higher. This Is
known as the "drift" of the diamond
drill. Iu drilling through different
kinds of material the amount of drift
will vary somowhat, aud it also varies
with the relation of tho dip of the
strata to the direction of tho drill
hole. Iu u bolo driven in any
direction other than vertical the
drill will drift, and even iu holes
started vertically a slight iuflueuco
will turn tho drill aside, aud ouco
having Btarted away from the true
vertical line tho dtiit will coutluue
with increasingly greater angle of
departuro with greater distuco from
the machlue. This tondency of the
diamond drill bit to drift is duo to
the fact that tho bit is slightly larger
than tho connecting pipes, which
permits the pipe lino to sag slightly,
glvitig the drill hole the dlroctiou
of an indefinite transition curvo.

ALAMO MILL READY
TO RUN IN A FEW DAYS
Practically Completed and Will Start
Up When the flume is
Finished.
Superintendent J. P. MctSuigau,
of tho Alamo, aud Millwright II. L.
MoLain, came iu from tho n lno Fri
day afternoon, mid roputt tho
practical completion of the mill.
Tho only thing now which is holding
back operations is about ouo fourth
of the 11 inn o, which remains un
finished. The cntlro distanco nf tho llunio is
a nillo and a quarter, hut work was
much impeded by the snow storm.
However, construction on tho remain
ing distance Is being pushed, aud it
Is thought that tho mill will bo
ready to operate now in a short time.
Superintendent McHulgan returned
this morning, aud Mr. MoLain loft
for the Snow Creek mine, wbero ho
has charge of tho mill going in there,
AJax In Highly Mineralized Ore.
Mining Euginoer D. M. Watters,
accompanied by Attoruoy Chauce,
went out to the Ajax Friday to
examine that property for E. Sander
son Smith, he being too uuwoll to
make the trip himself. For a month
or six weeks past, he has been ex
pecting to break Into a rich ore
shoot that shows for a distauce of
400 feet on the surface It was re
ported a day or two slnco that this
expectation had beou realized. Tho
whole faco of the tuunel is lu highly
mineralizod oro. Messrs. Watters
and Chauce brought in samples, but
assay returns havo not yet boon received.
THREE FEET OF GOOD
ORE AT THE OVERLAND.
M. E. Bain roturned Thursday
from tho Ororlaud. Tho tunnel on
that property is now iu threo feet of
good oro. On account of tho snow,
work has beou stopped iu the Hhaft,
high up tho tho mountain side, where
the streak of rich rook was uncovered
several weeks since. Ho climbed up
through tbo threo feet of snow aud
calls it a good day's work.
High Assays From Mount Rastus.
Bill Cassidy aud Dr. Faull locatod
two claims at Mt. Rastus, adjolnlug
tbo townsite. Yesterday au assay
was made of some rock takou from a
depth of ten feet below the surface.
Tho rosult obtaluod showed gold to
the amount of 900 per tou. Tho
owners of the claims are vory much
elated. Herald.
