THE SUMPTER MINER WILL WORK RICH PLACERS ON TOWNSITE. WHAT HAS BEEN DONE CAN BE DONE AGAIN. Wednesday, September jo, 190$ The Oregon Blue Gravel Mining company, organized here last meek to develop placer ground on the townslte, will get aotlon in a short time according to the statements made by its officers. General Charles S. Warren, president of the new con cern, who left a few days ago, will return in about three weeks. He will look after the incorporation of the company under the laws of the state of Washintgon while away. In the meantime Colonel E. S. Topping, vice-president and general manager, and A. J. Stinson, secretary and treasurer, will take steps toward hav ing the diggings prospected. Former operations on the ground, it is stated, warrant the belief that it will prove rich beyond conception. Ab far as definitely known now tho pay channel crosses Powder river near tho old Vincent sawmill on the Bourne road, aud enters tho townsito property in tho northwestorn part of the city oxteudlng between tho school house aud the Ellis Opera house iu the direction of Bear gulch. The company has tirty blocks of townsito property located in tho northwestern and southeastern portions of tho city along tho course of this channel. About two years ago Mr. Stinson crosscut the chanuel ou Fairview Btreet, where it showed a width of 150 feet, and ho states that he obtained from the pauuings at this polut from twenty-ilvo cents to $1.50 to tho pau. Ho also at that tlmo put down several shafts to tho bed rook, which averaged about twonty-Boveu feot in depth. At sevoral points in the city here wells havo been put down along the course of tho channel to obtain water for domestic purposes, good pay ground has boon encountered. Plenty of water for tho greater part of tho year can bo obtained from Powdor river. Tho management of tho company states that besides the prospect work this fallen attempt may bo made to start premauent operations. However, tho first work will bo to sink shafts, got in hoists and thoroughly prospect tho channel, and it is not likely that aotlvo opera tion ot any oxtouslvo scale will be begun until spriug. In addition tho townsito holdings, as previously stated, tho company has valuablo placor ground in tho John Day Valloy.
