A QUICKSILVER MOUNTAIN.
Black Butte Mines Will Install a 300-Ton
Smelter.
A MOO ton quicksilver plant Is go
ing up on tho llliick Hut to mines,
near Cottage Crovo Oregon, in which
(i. it. Dennis of Spokane is Inter
ested. Said Mr. Dennis yesterday:
"Four years of uninterrupted de
velopment has exposed tho most
tixpanslvo imbedding of cinnabar ore
on the American continent. If not in
tho world. Tlio work represents an
expenditure of nearly a half million
dollars.
"Tho Hlack ISutte quicksilver
mines are located in Lane county,
Oregon, some eighteen miles from
Cottage drove. To my brother.
II. Dennis, is due the credit fur the
Kuccenful development, as he litis
been without iuteiiuption its iiiehl
tect from the beginning. During
tho four years l'J.000 feet of woik
have been done, which includes n
vertical shaft to the 1,000 foot level.
At each 100 foot station u drift run
ning on the foot null has been
driven either side of the shaft, the
full length of the pay shoot, 'I'll
feet, and at each level the ledge has
boon cro-M'ut for Its full width of
eighty feot. The avciiigo of the oro
is about one per cent in quicksilver,
or say 610 a ton, and there is now
blocked out more than 82.000,01)1)
in (luiuksllver.
"A contract has just been let for an
additional tunnel II, 000 feet long,
which, when completed, will give n
vertical depth of 1,700 feet, and will
be tho main working tunnel of the
mine. The piesent forty ton smelt
ing or distilling plant is being en
larged to a HOI) ton capacity, and the
mine equipped with a complete elec
trical water power plant, furnishiug
power and light which places the
property In position for working
upon a very largo scale.
"Quicksilver may be designated as
ouo of tho rare minerals; at least,
mines producing it are rare. Other
than the lllack llutto mine, it is be
ing prulltably mined upon tho Amer
ican continent only in California,
whore it has been mined for many
years, yielding many millions of
money to its owners. Somo littlo
has been found in llrltlsh Columbia;
some in Mexico, whore the metal
lurgical methods uro crude, and
whore only fifty or olghty-tlvo per
cent of tho mercury in tho high grade
ores is recovered.
"Spain, of course, has produced
quicksilver for centuries, producing
annually about 100,000 llasks. val
ued at about 85,000,000." Spokes
man Review.
