trolysis of tho molten zinc chloride
Is very high. Tho vats are very sim
ple, being merely Iron cases lined
with lire brick. Tho zinc chloride
soaks into the porous brick and
solidities somwehere, so that it is
really a vat with zinc chlotide walls.
The vats are Internally heated, as in
tho cat-0 of aluminum smelt ing. The
cathode is fused zinc and tho anode
is carbon. Some makes of carbon do
not stand well, but suitable carbons
stand permanently; chlorine has no
action on tho carbons. The vats are
kept under a very light suction so
(ha if there ate any leaks the air goes
in instead of chloiiue coming out.
Tho carbons do not become heated
enough to bo burned by this small
admission of air. Since the vats ate
heated by tho excess of electric
power over the chemical, the linger
the coll the lower the electromotive
foice, so that if tho cell wein large
enough, tho clcctromotho force
might bo reduced to the point cor
responding to the heat of formation
of zinc chloride at that tempcratuie.
At tlrst, great dilllculty was contem
plated in handling the chloiine gas,
wnich has to bo pumped into the con
verter under a piessuro of ten to llf
Icon pounds per npuiro inch. It has
been found, however, that theto is
no dilllculty in this, and that a prop
erly designed pump will run continu
ously, day and night, without trou
ble if tho chlorine be dry. The dry

status of the process for treating
sulphide ores, invented by liiiu and
elaborated by him In connection with
K. A. Ashcroft. The novelty of the
process, which receives the more con
sideration because of the high stand
ing of its inventor, is such that
the icxults of a practical application
are awaited with interest. It has
not yet lccolvcd such an application,
but tho experimental work is being
done on a rather huge scale, which
f-hould give reliable results if prop
erly conducted and consideied. In

burn gives few additional details, but
it is interesting to note that he
states that the decomposition of sul
phide ore by chlorine has been
elfeuted on a large scale with perfect
success, as has also been tho electrol
ysis of molten ziuu chloride. Tho
latter is very Important, since it has
not previously been successfully
elfocted, although it has licen at
tempted by numerous investigators.
Air. Swiuobiiru states that so far a
current of .'1,000 amperes has been
used, but u vat with capacity for 10,
000 amperes is now being tried.
Above that size tho current will lie
inconvenient. With tho small ruts,
of U,000 uinperos capacity, four volts,
por coll is needed, but with 10,000
amperes, throe volts should do, al
though iu estimating it is best to
count on four; however, this allow
ance should cover tho power for tho

the Idaho conference which convened
at liolso. Kev. Wilder has t-oveied
his connection with the Idaho con
ference and, therefore, his pastoiate
at Humpter is ended. At his own
request, lie states, lie was trutifeirod
to the I'uget Sound conference,
though tho assignment of a charge
will not bo known until that body
meets. Ills successor Is Rev. N. Al.
Temple, formerly of Idaho Kails,
Idaho. lie will bo tieio about the
ilth or 10th of tho month. He bears
the leputatlou of being an able man
and of having done good-work at his
former charge.
Itev, Wilder and family will leave
as soon as his appointment is made,
which will probably be within a
week. As stated in last week's Is
sue, he has accomplished a groat
work here In building up the church,
and his congregation and friends gen
erally express regot over ills de
parture,
