Wednesday, 'July 22, 1903 THE SUMPTER MINER '? importauco of the erupt I vo rocks, nud does not couvluco us that tho waters feeding tbo springs of the eartb are the same which hare dopositd the millions of tous of ore in tho great mining districts. That tho waters in the vadoso region above tho ground wator level should bo able to collect uuy respec table quantity of motal seems im probable, in spito of their greater activity in tbo more open rocks near tbo surface. Theso waters, rein forced by every rain aud molting snow, do not search tbo rocks nor leach much value from them, bccaiiso they naturally chooso the more open space, enlarge them, and croato their own chaunels, lu which they remain permanently. When tboso waters reach the grouudwator level, they naturally spread but upon its surfaco, run off laterally (there being less Impediment to their courso abovo this lovol), aud reach daylight again at a lower level. That an underground sea of wator, continuous and saturating the rocks throughout, really does exist, seems a corollary of tho fact that tbo water, ouco hold entirely at tho earth's surface and abovo it, has gradually worked its way iuto tho oollug earth; the ouly argumeut against it consists in tho fact that a number of shafts havo bcou sunk in wet ground for many feet, aud at greater depth oucouutored u region freo from water. Cauuot this be explaiend by tbo probablo oxlstouco of au impervioua stratum at tho poiut where tbo water ceased? I take it that such occurence simply illustrates tho very irregular contour of tho groundwater surface. Theso shafts, if sunk still doepor, must oucouutor wator again, if tho under ground sea of water does exist. If then, tbo existence of au ex teusivo bolt of hydro-thormal fusion be admitted, aud if it is truo that this bolt Is constantly supplied with wator by a pormanont underground sea, it will not be difficult to explain tho mlnorulization of our veins aud tboir localization. Au extonslvo movement lu tho crust crouton a profouud aud complicated set of fissures at certaiu points. Theso Assures reach the belt of fused rock. The blocks of solid rock abovo sink into the fused mass, aud squeozo it In tho fissures toward the surfaco. This' makes tho dikes aud shoots , of oruptivo rock as wo ilnd thorn uoar , the veins. Simultaneously or lator, , otbor fissures, not sufficiently open or in proper position to udmit tho . fused muss, start up tho circulation of tho wators aud beglu tbo making of a vein. I havo attompted to show that tho waters in tho zouo of open fracture do not search or leach the masses of rock, but that they flow through them in permanent and open channels; that the waters in tbo middlo aud lower zones of tho underground sea are stagnant and not sufficiently effect I vo; and that we must look still deeper for the source that could supply the Immense masses of ore found In the veins. The invariable existence and evident genetic relation of the erup tive rocks with our ore-deposits suggest the source. It Is the true one. I refer the matter to geological specialists for further consideration. The celebrated Gund's "the beer of good cheer" always on draught at Dun phy'e The Clnh. Juue's big showlug in the Spokauo group of mlus, when $10o, 000 was disbursd lu dlvideuds, being followed with figures that ludicnto equal progress in the precious metal mining industry all over the country. A group of 83 mines aud metallurgical works paid dividends of 815,005,004, which is equivalent to about 10 per cent of tbo total for tho whole mineral industry. Foremost this year are the gold, silver aud lead properties, situated chiefly in Colorado aud Utah, of which 02 havo paid $7,387,771. The Americau Smolting !t Ketluing Co. reported tho largest dividends, 91,750,000 or 3.5 por cout ou its preferred stock, but nothing ou tho common. Silver King of Utuh leads tho precious metal mines, disbursing 000,000, or 20 por cout for the half year, which its noighbor, Daly West, has como forward with 540,- 000, or 18 per cent ou Its capitaliza tion. Of tho stocks in which foreigu in vestors aro mostly interested the Cump llird gold mine of Colorado yielded dividends of '2:t:S,700, or at tho rato of 12 per cent per auuiim. Alaska-Treadwoll, probably tho best paying low grade gold in I no in tho world, reported $2:10,000, or 4.0 per cout, for tho half your. There woro numorous smaller payers that divided monthly, but tbo toudeucy Is to chaugo to a quarterly basis for couveuiouce in bookoeplug. Tbo copper mines aro gradually recovering from tho demoralized motal markot of last year, aud judg ing from tho iucreasod dlvldoud paid lu tho second quarter by tho Calumot & Hocla company, earnings aro improving. This mluo puid $1, 005,000 iu divldouds for tho half year, which is 'equivalent to'i.00 per cout ou a capitalization of 12,500, 000. Amalgamated, which is essenti ally a holding company, paid ouly 1 per cout, or. $1,538,800, ou Iih Issued capital of $153,887,000. Two of Amalgamated subsidiary companies puid $1,200,000, half being credited to Itastou aud Montana at tho rato of 10 per cout for the six mouths, aud half to Auacoudu at 5 per cout. Tboso dlvideuds formed the basis of the Amalgamated payments. Ton other copper mines, situated principally iu Michlgau uud Arizouu, gavo out $2,004,504 dlvideuds, equivalent to au annual rato varying from 4 to 24 por cout on tho capitalization. Four zinc minos, headed by tho Now Jersey Zinc company, doolarod divldouds amounting to $043,030. Two California quicksilver properties paid $81,500, and ono nickel com pauy, $340,000. In addition to the abovo, 23 Mexclau gold, silver and copper properties reported $1,302,480, princiaplly in monthly dividends; four Central and South American mines, in which Americans are Interested, $213,402, and three Canadian concerns, $410,000.
